The following links are text files that are optimized for printing in a fixed width font, but I don’t encourage printing the complete translation. It’ll end up being several hundred pages long!

ATTENTION: People keep looking at the following guide and assuming it’s the same thing in the patch, when it ISN’T. The complete patch is nothing like this guide, which is amateur and far more literal than I would ever leave an actual game. If you want an indication of what the translation in the patch is like, play the patch, quit trying to judge it based on an old translation. Anyone with half a brain could tell you that this translation is different from what is in the patch. Honestly, who would leave Japanese honorifics in an ordinary game?

12/25/07 – Merry Christmas! Tales of Phantasia PSX’s English Patch Version 1.0 is now available!

08/23/07 – Added information about my new project which aims to translate Tales of Phantasia PSX entirely and provide a downloadable patch.

07/31/07 – Added some legal-ish stuff to the top of the page and a link to my new Tales of Phantasia review.

04/18/07 – Posted the Final Version of the translation. This includes everything. This is it. Translated, Edited, and Presented. Original Posting

03/14/07 – Posted the promised update. Contains the Present, Past, and Future. The Future has not been fully edited and the Sidequest section was left out of this particular release. Planning an update some time before March 28th.

12/25/06 – Uploaded a nice fancy file that has everything in the Present and Past. Set a target complete date at March 14, 2007.

12/09/06 – Updated layout of this page a bit.

11/12/06 – The Present is now complete! The complete file for the Present is now available. Enjoy!

09/03/06 – Updated the names of some of the chapters. I might have missed something, I’m uploading a file called Completion.txt that will be the best place to check in case I made an error or forgot to update here.

08/10/06 – The more work I do on breaking these up into chapters and editing my original translation, the more I realize it’s going to require a BIG overhaul when I finish it all. Not that it isn’t accurate, just that I’m not really liking how it sounds right now.

08/06/06 – I’d guess that my translation project is at about 20-25% complete. I’m working on the main quest dialogue, the NPC dialogue in towns, and even trying my hand at doing some of the voiced skits. Things are moving along at a good pace and I expect that I’ll finish this sometime early in 2007. Though I don’t make any promises.

  1. First of all; nice work on the translation.
Would I be able to complete the PSP version of ToP using this translation? or is it too different from the PSX version?

    Comment by Xeno — January 2, 2007 @ 2:59 am

  2. Doh I just read this;
‘In other words, this script can be used for the PSP version of the
game and it’ll be almost perfect. When I get some time I plan on adding the sections for the PSP version so that the script will be right.’

*does a happy dance and goes order ToP PSP*

  3. Amazing work Absolute Zero! Congrats on finally finishing it. You should advertise this on some faq sites, most people don’t even know this exists.

  5. The GRADE Shop has always been translated. It’s at the very bottom of the Complete Translation. It’s the last thing in the guide besides my concluding remarks and such. Check it out, it should be just what you’re looking for.

  8. Why doesn’t Cless from the Tales-Cless.org forums use this translation for his ToP psx patch? If only I knew how to insert text in the PSP version… You think Cless will be able (and willing) to make some tool for that?

    Comment by Rid — May 14, 2007 @ 8:52 am

  9. I’m afraid I can’t really answer that question since I don’t know. Cless has his own way of doing things, which I completely understand. He does currently have someone who is working on translating ToP PSX, so it’s not like it’s not getting done. I know at the moment he’s more focused on ToD2 then on anything else. As for the PSP version, if I had to guess based on what he said about ToD2 PS2 vs. ToD2 PSP, I’d say the answer is no. Since ToP has added content, I’d guess that there are a lot of things that are rather different. He’s pretty busy, so I can’t imagine he’d be very willing to write a tool like that unless it was to be used for a patch by PP.

So my answer is I don’t know, but at the same time, I’m not trying to push it either. I have my translation and I’m happy with it. This was never meant to be something that would replace all the work Cless and everyone at Phantasian Productions have put in, it’s just something I did for fun. Of course, I wouldn’t refuse to offer it to him, I just know that he’s not interested, which is also fine.

    Comment by throughhim413 — May 15, 2007 @ 3:46 pm

  10. Well, Cless doesn’t have a PSP; he can’t even test things if he wanted to hack the PSP Tales. ‘Sides, he doesn’t regard PSP stuff with much interest.

ToD2 PSP isn’t being done ’cause it’s got that extra compression scheme over PS2.

    Comment by gogs — June 12, 2007 @ 9:44 pm

  11. Wow, this is amazing! As a student of Japanese and a fan of the games, this is a very informative and helpful site.

    Comment by Zeromus_X — June 18, 2007 @ 12:48 am

  12. Oh well, guess it can’t be helped.

If you ever feel like translating something ToP related again I’d like to suggest Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 2. The ToP cast gets a bigger role than in ND3, which is also less enjoyable due to its SRPG system. And I’m pretty sure the text could be inserted into the game this time, with Kajitani-Eizan’s help.

Anyway, you’ve already made a legendary contribution to the Tales community. I wish you good luck on the rest of your path.

    Comment by Kain — July 3, 2007 @ 9:45 am

  14. Many thanks for doing all this. It seems that ToP will never receive an English version, so without this guide I’d never be able to play it.
I got hooked on the ‘tales’ worlds with Tales of Eternia (PSP)and this will be my fourth one (once I finish radiant mythology – PSP)

    Comment by Babel — July 21, 2007 @ 2:47 pm

  15. UMDgen can edit content from PSP ISOS, with MGS:PO ISO you can open the codec file and read all the conversations(you can probably edit it too, but I never bothered)
ToP files al have weird names though,so one would have to open them all to look for strings of text
aaanyway, did they change the pact ring locations in this game?I can’t find the amethyst, sapphire and emerald contract rings

    Comment by Mehso — August 18, 2007 @ 9:07 am

  16. I’ll have to take a look into UMDgen, though I imagine that as with most hacking tools, it’ll be beyond my ability. I’m really not to skilled on the technical aspect of hacking, which is why I just did the translation guide for ToP.

As for the rings, I don’t know which version you played before, but they should be the same as the PSX version. If you played the SFC version though, I’m sure they’re different. Here are their locations.

Amethyst – Future Lone Valley. It’s in the basement area that was previously flooded with shouki/miasma. It’s on the far left of the screen near where you had to put on of the rocks.

Sapphire – Future Cave of the Spirits. I don’t remember exactly, but I want to say that this ring is in the room to the left of where you fought Gnome.

Emerald – Let me apologize in advance for this one, it’s a bitch. Obviously, this too is in the Future. First, you have to go all the way to the bottom of Dwarven Ruins that extend from the Moria Mineshaft. In the final treasure room, you’ll find one of the three colored lights. Assuming you’ve found the other two from the Aifried sidequest, you’ll be able to progress through the Cave of Darkness (in my opinion, facing the toughest enemies in the game). In the room just downstairs from the Clock Puzzle, the Emerald Ring can be found. If you see three openings in a wall, follow the middle one to a dead end where you’ll find the box. The real bitch? You have to go all the way back down the Moria Mineshaft extension if you want to summon Pluto.

    Hope that helps!

    Comment by throughhim413 — August 18, 2007 @ 11:12 am

  17. yeah I played the Famicon version (and about 30 minutes of the GBA version before I burned the cart to ashes =p)
however, as I said in gamefaqs, I am pretty sure found the amethisty ring in the dwarven ruins, I had all the rings exept for the emerald and amethisty ones, and I had already revisited every place in order to get the rings and Arche’s spells, and both of those rings were missing, and after leaving the dwarven ruins it was there in my inventory….

  20. Is there any plans to put this translation into the psp version. i am used to my voice actors.

but this great nver the less. thanks so much for your hard work.

    Comment by Dreamers — December 27, 2007 @ 12:31 am

  21. No Dreamers, no plan about it, and probably won’t ever happen. That would mean redoing most of the code and fixing several dialogue for the new Psp script. It would be easier to make an improved Psx version with all the dubbed dialogues and the news sprites, but that too won’t ever happen.

    Comment by Gemini — December 27, 2007 @ 3:00 am

  22. This is so great. Thanks to all involved in making this happen!

  24. Thanks a thousand times for this, i really love it ^-^ Always wanted to finally play ToP after playing so many other Parts of Tales (The english ones)! Whee!

I’d love to see more – any chance you could/would want to modify any of those PS2 Japan-Exclusive tales? Playing Rebirth a little was fun, but if you only understand the spoken parts something’s just missing :P Same for the Destiny Remake and Destiny 2… Any chance we might see it happen? I don’t mean to be greedy or anything XD just wondering (and wishing)

    Comment by zephiris — December 27, 2007 @ 5:42 pm

  25. Any chance of it happening? You’ll just have to wait and see. ^_^

    Comment by throughhim413 — December 27, 2007 @ 5:47 pm

  26. wow…that is my first impression with this translation. First of all it is undeniably awesome that you started this AND released within 6 months. Also I love the font you used for the translation. How many hours do you think roughly did you put into this project? O and I will wait and see what happens with future translations. Thank you guys for a great translation and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

    Comment by Ken — December 27, 2007 @ 6:25 pm

  27. This looks great – I’ve been playing an untranslated CD of the game on a PS1 emulator, but with a little ripping, patching, and burning, I’ll have a much more accessible version on my hands. But one thing – do you have a translation of the item list handy? I want to see how you’ve translated the names of certain weapons and armor.

    Comment by Lazzie — December 27, 2007 @ 9:45 pm

  28. @Ken: As for myself, I’ve spent about 3 hours a day at late night, for 3 months. Oh, and the project took us exactly 4 months. :P

    Comment by Gemini — December 28, 2007 @ 2:29 am

  29. I couldn’t even begin to guess how many hours went into this project… Some days I did almost nothing related to ToP, but other days I did nothing but work on ToP. It was a crazy pace, but I really enjoyed it to be honest. Probably not a pace I could keep up with every project though. ToP is an exception to all normal rules for me.

    Comment by throughhim413 — December 28, 2007 @ 2:44 am

  30. As if you guys expect us to give Namco a dime for this if they refuse to release it in English. If they want my business that badly, they will earn it and release their products here in English themselves rather than making me pay outrageous import fees. *rushes to BitTorrent*

    Comment by John Blaze — December 28, 2007 @ 8:30 pm

  33. No, John, I didn’t give up on Dracula X at all, especially because the PSP American translation sucks so badly. :P It will probably be my next release for the new year, as well as another couple of projects (secret here :D ).

  34. What you guys do is amazing and inspiring, I for one salute your efforts.

You guys seem like real wizards with translating games, have you heard of the Policenauts translation project at junkerhq.net? the guys there are doing fantastic work but they said they are having technical problems with adding text to the game, perhaps you could help them out with troubleshooting!

  35. AMAZING Work! Great job!

    Comment by DarthWolf — December 29, 2007 @ 10:51 am

  36. Is there any difference between the script in the patch and the complete translation? I’d like to import the PSP version, and if the patch’s script is better, could I somehow get a copy of the script alone? Sorry if this is an unreasonable or stupid request, I have absolutely no clue about any of this patch and emulator stuff, it’s so confusing! Thank you all for doing this, I really appreciate the hard work you put into your projects!

    Comment by Mikka — December 30, 2007 @ 1:36 am

  37. The patch is much better, yes. I’m thinking about rewriting the complete translation guide at some point, but you have to realize how big of an undertaking that is. Plus the fact that I’m pretty ToP’d out right now. It might be something I get to in the next half a year or so, but I can’t imagine redoing all of that right away…

  45. Great job….
    I’ve been waiting to play this for years. O___O;
Well I have been sticking with cless and them for some time hoping for an release. Both seem great as far as I can tell. It would be nice if you tested his patch to see if it works on the psp correctly or not.
I wanted to know if you would try doing other translations for other games entirely. Projects such as Kajitani-Eizan’s translations, ? don’t know what is left (snes games) and/or other psx games (front mission 2 remake).
I’ll be blunt, you have some typos… <.< and the beginning the [HP] with dhaos and them shound be even. 10hrs into the game i might have to replay it T-T” to list the errors.
~Great Releases, makes all kinds of people cry. T-T

    Comment by CL — January 4, 2008 @ 1:34 am

  47. Shinma no Tenchuu, I’m not sure what errors you were talking about. I couldn’t make sense of your sentence in regard to Dhaos and whatnot. Could you be more specific?

  48. I love you guys for translating it! But I’m having a problem, I don’t know how to make the Iso for it ^^;

I have CDRWin, and I tried to make the Iso but it doesn’t work. Can anyone help me?

    Comment by Raven — January 5, 2008 @ 2:39 am

  49. Great work and all, but I’m having serious sound problems. Like you said in the Readme, ePSXe has problems playing some sounds, but In my case it’s 90% of the battle sounds and 100% of the skits (at least up to the point I played).
I tried Pcsx, but it’s even worse. I have the sound but it doesn’t end! I start a skit, it goes on normally and then instead of ending I get the voices from the next skit in like, and the next, and the next… Seriously, having Chester speak with Arche’s voice was the most disturbing thing @_@
I also tried another emulator that I don’t remember the name of, but I couldn’t get it to run the game at all so I just deleted it. And I can’t use real hardware, because I don’t have it chipped…

You think you can work that out for 1.1 or something? Or at least post the settings for the emulators you tested it on?

    Comment by Poki#3 — January 8, 2008 @ 10:50 am

  50. The game works fine on pSX 1.13. The only problem I’ve had is that the skit voices sometimes crackle a bit if they go on for too long, but that’s obviously an emulator problem. I’ve even got rumble in my 360 pad with the XBCD360 drivers.

    Comment by Fudgehat — January 8, 2008 @ 5:21 pm

  51. I second Fudgehat’s experiences. Works flawlessly except for these crackles.

    Comment by Chip — January 8, 2008 @ 8:00 pm

  52. Thanks. I got it to work with pSX, though I would still prefer ePSXe :/
Oh well… at least I can play and know what’s I’m doing ^^ Big thanks to the translation team!

    Comment by Poki#3 — January 8, 2008 @ 10:44 pm

  53. I used ePSXe, it works great. Are you sure you have the write plug-ins for your computer? That would be my guess as to why it would do that.

    Comment by Ken — January 9, 2008 @ 5:26 am

  54. Well I didn’t have any problems with ePSXe before.
For sound, I’m using the Eternal SPU Plugin 1.50, Enabled ADPCM, CDROM and XA sound.
Direct Sound. Buffer 64. Smooth SPUasynch. Neill’s reverb. All 3 game fixes enabled.

Like I said, I don’t have dialog with it.

    Comment by Poki#3 — January 9, 2008 @ 10:42 am

  55. Your talking about the voice dialog that comes up once in a while with certain events right?

Well if thats the cause then yeah its your drivers. I had to double check with my emulator cause ive been playing 30 hours of the game psp flawless. But I made sure and played a good hour of the beginning on the ePSXe and it works fine with these plugins. The graphics actually look way better with this plug-in if you set it on ‘NICE’ in the config option. I got the plugins from a torrent site.

The plugins im using are as follows:
    video – Pete’s OpenGL2 Driver 2.7
    sound – Pete’s DSound Audio Driver 1.15
    cdrom – ePSXe CDR WNT/W2K core 1.5.2.

although I really dont use the cdrom cause I just use ISOs. But I have audio on these settings.

After sooo many years this is the first time that I can truly enjoy Tales of Phantasia (I know about the DeJap translation but I just don’t like it). My shelved PSP finally found something worthy to be played on it. This is a dream coming true in its most literal sense. God bless you.

    Comment by Gustavo — January 21, 2008 @ 6:53 pm

  58. Gustavo, if you are italian, please don’t use babelfish or google to translate and just write out the message in Italian. Anyway, if you are running the patcher under Win98, there’s nothing much you can do. Ask somebody else with XP or Linux to patch the iso for you.

  69. What’s with the patcher? It trashed the TOC of the image I used. For some reason, Alcohol 120% still thinks that the image is supposed to be 558MB, when it should be around the 641MB mark. Emulators don’t mind it, but pSX (at least) doesn’t care about the invalid TOC. Problem is, my PSX does…

    Comment by silverpower — April 14, 2008 @ 3:05 am

  70. The patcher adds an extra 50 MB to the ISO I believe. Gemini can tell you more, but I don’t believe anyone else has had trouble with the patch on real hardware.

    Comment by throughhim413 — April 14, 2008 @ 3:21 am

  71. Looks like most burner software doesn’t know how to properly deal with the generated image. CloneCD seems to ignore the TOC issue, though, and treats it as the correct length. Hopefully I won’t have to waste any more CD-Rs…

What happens is that every time I try to burn it, it gets cut off at the original length. My cuesheet is correct (doesn’t specify a track length, at least), so I’m not sure what’s going on there.

Might want to bug Gemini about rechecking the way he expands the ISO, then, to make sure that a valid, full-length TOC is generated. Not slamming his skills or anything, mind, but it’d be a good idea to check anyway. :)

    Comment by silverpower — April 14, 2008 @ 4:35 am

  72. (Ugh, spoke too soon – CloneCD tried to burn it as a DVD, even though CD media was inserted. Another wasted CD-R, which I’m a tad pissed about.)

    Comment by silverpower — April 14, 2008 @ 4:53 am

  73. Never mind. Mode2 throws off the size calculations, so the apparent 90MB difference is located there. False alarm! >_<

  74. Hi,
I am wondering if any of you guys here interested in porting the PSP version of TOD2 into English. If you are interested, I can provide helps. I just hacked into the system, and managed to figure out the new 04-type compression algorithm that is used in the game. Thus, a translation is no longer impossible, in fact, a Chinese translation is going on just around the corner. However, I really love to see there is an English version in the future.
    Let me know.

P.S. Just in case if you are wondering why I didn’t go to those folks at Phantasian Productions, don’t even ask, I WON’T help them for a reason I don’t want to disclose there.

  75. When you say ToD2, are you talking about the actual Tales of Destiny 2 (the sequel to Tales of Destiny as released in Japan) or Tales of Eternia? I assume you’re talking about the actual ToD2. For the time being, I’d say that I’m not looking to pick up any new projects, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have any interest. Gemini is currently busy with Persona and I’m working on my own stuff as well, so for right now, neither of us are in a position to work on it. However, if you want to shoot me an e-mail so I can save your contact information, I might be interested somewhere down the line.

  76. Yup, I meant Tales of Destiny 2, which is never released outside of Japan (PSP version of ToE had an European release, which is in English). You can reach me at SUBSTITUTE_WITH_MY_NAME_SHOWN_HERE_BELOW@gmail.com

  82. I seem to have a bug, everything worked fine until I got to the part where Cless drops the Wraith Ruby from the moving transport pad, it only goes 1 way, I get back on and I’m stuck floating in the air.

This is with both epsxe 1.7 and psx 1.13. Translations are great and would love to continue the game. Had zero problems during the patcher and the original bin/cue I made lets me go past this point, just not the patched version.

  85. I think there is a problem when it is coverted to psp format(eboot), I am at Midgard where you start the war in the past.
I start and about 6 to 10 battles in, the game freezes and then shuts off.
I have since downloaded another copy the posted by eulogy on a torrent site, but It too did the same thing.
Does any one have a fix for me to solve this, maybe even a save file after the batle.
Or should I just play it with an emulator, or burn it to a disc?
Also if I do play it with an emulator will I have to restart it over again or can I convert the save files I have to another format?
    any help would be great
    thanks

    thanks

    Comment by Sora22 — July 4, 2008 @ 12:35 am

  87. If the video is freezing, it might be related to either your copy of the game or the system/disc/emulator you’re using to play it. We didn’t do anything that should have affected the videos, so you may want to check your settings. Does the OP video give you trouble or just the cutscenes in-game?

    Comment by F3NRiR? — July 5, 2008 @ 4:27 am

  89. Hi, apparently some Chinese gamers have translated the PSP ToP. They’ve released it as a PSP plugin which loads with the game. I’ve played it for a bit and it works pretty well. This is the link to details and download of the translation:

    http://psp.duowan.com/0807/79280071379.html

The site is in Chinese though. I’m posting in hopes that an English translation patch for the PSP version of ToP can be made using this incredible translation?

    Comment by CubicU07 — July 6, 2008 @ 5:57 am

  90. There’s no way I will work for another 4 months on a game that is already available in English. Just forget about it, once and for all.

And no, that Chinese stuff wouldn’t help at all.

  93. Is there a way to play this on my PS2? I think there’s a way, but I don’t know how…

I have a Slim PS2 and some CD-Rs. I will not install any modchips or open the console up, but I am willing to download whatever computer program that might be needed to get the CD to work in a PS2.

Any help would be very appreciated!

    Comment by Key — July 13, 2008 @ 6:20 pm

  94. The only way to do that in a Slim PS2 without opening it would be to use Magic Keys and buy a boot disc. By doing so, you can mod the console without voiding the warranty. It only costs about $20-25 for both of them and just about anyone can do it.

    Comment by throughhim413 — July 13, 2008 @ 6:44 pm

  95. Thanks!

But… I’m really new at this. I don’t know any of the terms or products needed.

Where exactly do I buy Magic Keys? I looked at what I think is their website (http://www.magickeys.net/), but I can’t find any “buy” link… Also, what is the exact name of the boot disc I should use? Are these boot discs sold in stores or do I have to buy them off of their website?

  96. If I used your patch, which is great, and I’m thinking of writing a walkthrough, who should I give credit to for the patch?

    Comment by Smartazjb0y — July 15, 2008 @ 10:49 am

  97. Credit for the patch should go to both myself (throughhim413) and Gemini. I look forward to seeing what kind of a walkthrough you produce. ToP PSX has never had a good English walkthrough, glad to hear that someone wants to work on one.

    Comment by throughhim413 — July 15, 2008 @ 10:53 am

  98. Yeah, I haven’t seen any good ones so far. It will be my first one, but I feel so…sure about it. I’ve used walkthroughs for a long time, and have played a lot of games, but I never felt like making one. When I started play ToP with your patch, I felt like this was a game that I could make a walkthrough of.

  99. First of all THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! I have been waiting to play this TOP version in english for over 6 years.
I have a question about burning the patched image. I applied the patch to the .bin file, I checked using epsxe emulator and it works perfect; however when I tried to burn the image to play in my console it doesnt works; I checked the burned disc and there are some folder and files (DAT folder, dummy.bin, readme.pdf,etc). I already tried using ImgBurn and Nero… It always get the .cue file instead of the patched .bin, could be this the problem? how can I burn the disc correctly..? please, I want to play the game in my console.. Thanks in advance..

    2. If yes, how to patch that darn .iso file or something. I mean I’ve got the iso of the PsP Version. And your Patcher too. But i dont really understand your introductions.. Which .bin or .img file?? All i tried didnt work.(Cause of errors form the patcher, not compatible or something[section22 error])

So could PLEASE someone help me? =(

    Comment by Jim — August 1, 2008 @ 3:02 pm

  107. We didn’t remove anything from the game. You must be confusing which version you’re playing because all of the voice that was originally in the PSX version is still there. If you want the whole game to be voiced, you’ll have to play the “Full Voice Edition” for the PSP. There’s a reason that the voice was a big selling point for it.

    Comment by throughhim413 — August 1, 2008 @ 3:40 pm

    Comment by Meh — August 2, 2008 @ 6:29 am

  112. Someone e-mailed me a while back saying that they were planning on writing a PSX walkthrough, though I haven’t heard from them since. The SNES walkthrough matches the basic outline of the PSX version, but obviously treasures are in different places. Sadly there’s no ideal solution at this point unless you want to buy a Japanese guidebook (which have extremely helpful maps detailing treasure locations).

Well, after I completed the PSX version with your patch I gonna make a good Walktrough, look for it. :P

    Comment by Meh — August 4, 2008 @ 5:45 am

  124. Hey, the translated PSX version runs on the PSP using popsloader with custom firmware 4.01 m33-2 perfectly (so far, I’m only an hour or two into the game) after being converted with IceTea into an EBOOT. Great job! Haven’t checked popsloader compatibilities on any other version than 4.01 yet, though.

I used to think this game was horrible, but that was from playing the rather low framerate GBA version.

    Comment by GourdCaptain — August 4, 2008 @ 9:14 am

  125. Yea, the GBA version really sucks imo. And yes, the PSX Version for the PsP runs very well for me too. But I´m stuck, because the game freezes. Normally it should show me a video sequence, but it doesn’t. It just freeze.

    Comment by Meh — August 4, 2008 @ 4:52 pm

  126. I’m still working on a walkthrough, but I stopped for a while. I have too much homework to do, but I expect to be done by…October? I know, far away, but I want it to be good.

  127. Hi! Today I have completed Tales of Phantasia thanks to your beautiful patch, and I wish to thank again both you and Gemini for the great opportunity you have given to every Tales fan out there.

Having played the Sfc version ages ago (not to mention some hours on the crappy Gba release), I gradually began underestimating the game, but being finally able to enjoy the Ps1 remake drastically changed my previous opinion.

With my love for this great series shining bright, I wish you well and thank you again for all the efforts you have put into this ^__^

  132. Japanese or English version, doesn’t make a difference. The emulator is not fully compatible with the game. The patch is NOT causing that error, it’s the emulation core.

    Comment by Gemini — September 12, 2008 @ 5:03 am

  133. What emulator is recommended then? I assume that this problem has been overcome

    Comment by Bluufish — September 15, 2008 @ 10:30 pm

  134. double posting for great justice
    To Gato
The patch is actually causing the error <___<
Tried the patched on epsxe froze, tried a clean on epsxe, it was fine
So all you need to do is to get a clean unpatched iso and play it on epsxe to get through that part, you’ll be asked to save righttt before the aerial fight so save there
Then use cwcheats to save your memory card on the psp etc and you’re good to go

    Comment by Bluufish — September 16, 2008 @ 6:06 pm

  135. Just a quick question: Is patch 1.1 still coming? I saw a message about it quite some time back, but I can’t find it anymore and there’s been no news for months.

I’d been holding off burning this one because I’m down to my last CD-R 650, but if this is the final release then I’ll use it for this.

    Comment by kyon — September 20, 2008 @ 10:53 pm

  138. Well, it is the PSX version after all… Inserting the PSP sprites creates a number of issues. Even if we don’t discuss the legal nature of the problem, it presents problems in the game that we didn’t feel like dealing with.

    Comment by throughhim413 — September 21, 2008 @ 5:29 am

  139. @Bluufish: no, it’s not the patch. It was tested on real hardware and there was not such a problem. And quite frankly, who cares about ePSXe.

I’ve been playing this patch on the psp (currently running on CFW 5.00 M33-2 and I’ve made it to the last dungeon without having to switch to the unpatched version. That took a little luck in the midgard battle (yup it got stuck on me about 7 times before I made it to that save point on my 8th attempt) and skipping the scene after that boss battle (jeez people just press start and watch the scene on youtube)

  154. AWESOME WORK, if there would be more people like you….life for rpg fans would be heaven…

if i think about rpg oldschool games who never reached us q,q
alone the sega saturn has so much to offer (wachenröder, farland saga, and a dozen more)
but no one ever translated saturn games.

but i dont waver…i hope for the future, a better future with good old games.
I dreamed about a psx phantasia translation for 5 years….you did it!!

i dont know if you can imagine how me and other peoples feel about your work, but if tears of joy could talk, they would compose an opera for you : )

i’m looking forward to your next work
(and still hopes that a new generation will pick up some saturn goodies and record of lodoss war sega-cd…..
why i tell you this? because you see i know what it means to hope and wait ^.~)

    greets from germany

  155. Playing it on an original PSX system, the opening movie song, skit voices, diolouge voices, and half of the battle voices (like the やーた!at the end of battles) do not play. Anyone else have the same issue? Did I do something wrong in patching it?

    Thanks in advance

  156. I just tested copying the game straight without patching it and I am having the same problem. I wonder if its the copying to ISO that is having issues, or the burning to CD from ISO..

  157. Fixed it!

For anyone else having the same problem, I figured out it was the ripping to ISO step where it was going wrong. I used a different program to rip the disc and it now it works perfectly.

  158. I’m playing this on my psp and it freezes just after the magitch cannon activation ;___; any ways to solve this? ;w;

  159. Same here. It freezes on most anime scenes for me. If it helps, I have 5.00 M33, and it didn’t seem to freeze when I played in 3.90 M33.

  160. For people complaining about issues playing on PSP:
Patch the PSX iso yourself, do no get an already-patched image!

You probably downloaded the PSP version available on the pirate bay trackers.
Well I did too, and I can confirm there is a problem with this eboot.
The videos during the Midgard battle will make the game crash.
Although you can skip the first one by hitting “start”, you cannot avoid the one when they fire the Magitech weapon.
    So you’re stuck.

    The solution:
Get the original Japanese PSX iso.
    Apply the translation patch.
Convert your new PSX iso into a PSP eboot. (with a soft like PSX2PSP for example)

This worked great for me, no problem anymore with the videos.

However some issues on the PSP still remain:
when Arche casts a spell, the game might randomly freeze. (confirmed with firmwares 4.10M33 and 5.00M33-4 on my PSP slim)
I do not understand the cause, it is not linked to a particular spell, and occurs only with Arche.
This problem happened the first time near the Olive village.
But it is very random : it can happen 2 or 3 times in 15 minutes, but you might also be able to play during several hours without any crash.
Maybe it’s a bug with pops, to be sure one should try to play the PSX Japanese version on PSP.

To conclude: thank you very much to Gemini and throughhim413!
Awesome work guys, I wanted to play a translated PSX version for so long… So katajikenai to you. ;)

  161. This patch works with full voice edition?

  162. The link to the old translation is broken? Have you removed or transferred it somewhere else? Here’s hoping the translation could still be available… Thanks a lot.

  163. Hi I’ve downloaded the game from here http://www.emuparadise.org/cgi-bin/download1.cgi?psx-talesofphantasia# I’ve tried patching it put it would error half way through the patch. If i tried to play it the game would work but all the text and text boxes would be missing. Anyone else have this problem or know the solution? I’m on a windows 7 if that changes anything.

    Thanks in advance

  164. Hey, in regards to the Midgard glitch where the game freezes on the psp, after much trial and error I discovered that the problem is indeed with the specific version of the eboot (I got mine from pspiso, and I hear the version from pirate bay trackers does the same thing) However rather than going through the trouble of patching the ISO yourself (which was impossible for me since I own a mac) I found an eboot that works just fine.

Simply download this version instead and your save data will transfer right over with no problems, but more importantly the game won’t freeze anymore. Your welcome :)

  166. Thanks for the link there, but does this copy freezes when we use Arche later in the game? Her spells tend to freeze a lot…
