Take This 56K!

Yeah, that’s right.  Prepare yourself for the picture frenzy.

First, some dialogue in action.  Auto-linebreaks!  Yeah!

More dialogues!  I love these shots.  Maybe because I can see my translating work in a real way?  Either way, aren’t they pretty?

The previously troubled Rune Bottle, now working.  Yes.  The last shot is the more final one, as you can see, the numbers have been slightly realigned at the top right.

Shop screen.  Finally got those shop names working.  This screen was fully remade by Gemini.  I like it, yes I do.

Titles and items now display properly!  Yeah!!!  This is one of my favorite things in this update for sure.

Cooking menus reborn.  Pretty much the final version here. The stars and dots were previously missing, but as you can see now, they are not.

And here’s a blog exclusive picture, showing the beauty of the centered area names.  Gotta love it, right?

And on the translation front, last time Gemini and I estimated, I was aout 35% done with the script.  Still needs a lot of editing and touching up though.  But I’ll get around to that sooner or later.

  1. I like your work. The only concern I have is ease of reading, as in the font is too slender in my opinion and may be hard on some people’s eyes. Cless was working on a translation over at http://tales-cless.org/ and if you see the font in their pictures it’s much easier to read for me, at least. Those thin fonts are good for fitting a lot on the screen but tend to be rough on the eyes.

Is there any way you could use a font like theirs or make two patches, one slimline and one bold font?

  2. No, we won’t make use of the Mammut font, sorry. It might be hard to read on a PC monitor, but it isn’t at all on a TV, and that’s all that counts for me.

  3. I agree with Gemini. Having played this game on my PSP (clearly a much smaller screen then either a TV or a PC monitor), I had no trouble whatsoever reading the text. The screenshots are small so naturally the font is as well, but I don’t believe that this will be a problem come release time.

  5. I agree with Gemini. I’m going to be playing this translation on a PS1 connected to a TV, and that’s how it should be played. If it looks good like that, I don’t care about how it looks in emulators.

  6. I actually prefer the look of the smaller, less bold font personally as it not only allows you to fit more text per line than a heavier font, but it adds a certain air of maturity or novel-like readability that really says “complex” rather than “cartoon”. The new shots are indeed very exciting and reassuring that progress is being made by leaps and bounds. Thank you for the frequent project updates! Looking forward to the next one!.

  7. Thanks for the comments everyone.

darkcloudy, as for what you asked, I’m playing the game on my PSP after using a POPstation GUI. Since the PSP emulates the real PSX almost perfectly and since our patch works on real hardware, you should definitely be able to play it on the PSP.

Soluzar, yeah, I agree with you. The funny thing is, the text looks fine in emulators too. It’s just that these pictures are so small. The text is very readable even in emulators.

Chip, thanks as always for your comments, I’m glad you’ve been following our progress. Having people anticipating our release certainly makes me want to make sure everything turns out perfect.
