Well, I think the image about says it all.  But in case it doesn’t, we are proud to announce that on Christmas Day, December 25th, 2007, we will be releasing our 1.0 patch for Tales of Phantasia PSX.  Get those emulators started, dust off your official systems, get your game out of the closet, because before long, you’ll be enjoying the remake of the first title in the Tales series, Tales of Phantasia.  I don’t know what else to say, but having this project nearing completion is a matter of great pride for me.  I hope that you all will enjoy this game as much as I’ve enjoyed working on it. ^_^

  1. haha i just realized it but the game came out in 1998 right on my birthday

  2. Hah. ‘Twas to be expected. Why the 2-days-long lateness compared to the day of release?

    Comment by RyuMizuchi — December 19, 2007 @ 5:34 pm

  3. Because nobody cares about the 9th anniversary of a game’s release. We decided on this release date back in November, and I totally forgot about ToP’s initial release date until I was making that image actually. It’s by total chance that they’re so close. It’s not an anniversary gift, it’s a Christmas present. ^_^

  6. Will ToP PSX will work on a Modded PS2? i have a Matrix Infinity SE but i can’t get any of my backup PS1 games except castlevania – SOTN and it only just barely works, any ideas? i guess i could use an emulator, but everyone knows it’s so much better playing on a real console. Thanks guys 😀

  8. i wonder if i can play it in my psp

    Comment by ZBlalde — December 19, 2007 @ 9:45 pm

  9. I’ve been playing it on my PSP. So I guess the question is, do you want to play it on your PSP?

As we’ve said before, you should be able to play this patch on ANYTHING that can run PSX games. It works on real hardware and our testers haven’t reported any serious problems on real hardware.

  10. Can you tell me if the translation is similiar to the snes one? kinda hilarious when arche talk dirty on the ship when she was drunk 😡
also throughhim413 what the compression size for ToP please?

    Comment by Blackpanda — December 20, 2007 @ 8:04 am

  11. This game REALLY deserve this patch.
    Many thanks guys ! :p !
(Delay it 2 more days and it would make a great birthday present 😀 )

  12. =D!!!!!!!! THANKS n_n!!! CANT WAIT FOR X-MAS!

    Comment by Alan — December 20, 2007 @ 11:00 am

  13. No, this translation is not similar to the SNES one. I didn’t go out of my way to change any dialogue nor did I spice up the boat scene with things that weren’t originally there. I’m not sure about compression size. Gemini would be the one to ask.

Too bad my psp broke two weeks ago…

I’ll play it on pc since i don’t have a modded psx. (I was playing it on pc because an plain PAL psx isn’t capable of playing japaneese games.

  19. This post is very hot, it is high ranked at http://www.adminor.info (daily weblog, weblog post ranking site)

    Comment by frmad — December 20, 2007 @ 8:58 pm

  20. Well that’s certainly a first… Almost makes you think people have been wanting to play Tales of Phantasia PSX in English for a while.

    Comment by throughhim413 — December 20, 2007 @ 9:04 pm

  21. I’m not sure how long you and gemini have known each other but i wish you guys started doing this awhile ago, i mean come on only around 4 months to complete ToP PSX thats insane, you guys are awesome! 😀 😀 😀

    Comment by Aeka Shiraki — December 20, 2007 @ 9:36 pm

  22. Awesome!!! I have every version of this game possible and have played through all of them. It sucks that only the original SNES and butchered GBA version are in English. Thanks a lot for this translation. I can’t even describe how long I’ve been waiting for this games translation. I was also wondering if it would be possible for you to release instructions on how to get the PSP sprites into the PSX version. Don’t mean for this request to be disrespectful but I like the PSP sprites personally and have the PSP release as well. So if anyone could explain how to do it it would be a great help. THANKS AGAIN, GREAT WORK!!!!

  24. I also would like to know if there will ever be a psp sprite patch, cause I’d like to see how they work.. I’ve heard tho that they aren’t really fully done, don’t know if it’s a rumor or not thou.

    Comment by Artan — December 21, 2007 @ 7:54 am

  25. Please, read the news. We didn’t make this (https://zettaizero.wordpress.com/2007/12/14/beta-clarification/) just for fun.

    Comment by Gemini — December 21, 2007 @ 10:49 am

  26. I’ve been watching this translation since i read a post of yours at RHDN last august. I like what i see and appreciate all the hard work by both your team and Cless and his team. I’ll play through both patches, this game and the serries is really fun. I Have a technical question about patching. What format does the disc image have to be in? BIN/CUE, MDS/MDF ect? What format are you using to hack the game? Also what release? original? Mega Hits? I want to be prepared when the patch is released.

    Comment by JWW — December 21, 2007 @ 12:00 pm

  27. The patch will be fully compatible both with the original and later versions. As for the ISO format, Bin/Img+Cue is the way.

    Comment by Gemini — December 21, 2007 @ 3:14 pm

  28. Thanks. I guess i have some converting to do

    Comment by JRW — December 21, 2007 @ 3:31 pm

  29. It Will be my first patched game…
    How will I do that??
I’m from Argentina, so I speak spanish… Sorry if my english isn’t very good

    Comment by Nahueru — December 21, 2007 @ 7:54 pm

  30. I believe the translation will come out as a custom patch. It will include instructions, at the very least.

    Comment by I.S.T. — December 22, 2007 @ 3:52 am

  31. You’ll need to install about 64GB for various tools. Of course, you’ll need to recompile them all (it’ll take about 3 or 4 months).
Them you can try to patch the game. The process will take a couple of days but you’ll have to put coal in your computer every 3.14 hours to provide enought energy (it may not work on the first try. Just be patient and try again, and again, and again…).

Or you have a computer released after 1990 so you’ll just have to execute the patch programm (I suppose it will be that way) 🙂

    Comment by LK — December 22, 2007 @ 3:19 pm

  32. Hello There!!. My name is Javs and i come from México. I recently found your site and now i see that the release of the english patch is coming in Christmas =D. Thank you a lot for this translation, i see several pics and you and your team did a great job, its much more closer to the original script of the game (also far better than the rude DeJap Translation). Now i only have a few questions

1- in which format you will released your patch ? or what software i need to patch my iso (cue, bin) ?
    2 – the skit chat is subtitled n_nU ?

    Happy Holydays Fellow,s =D

    Comment by Javs — December 22, 2007 @ 4:28 pm

  33. Once an for all: please read the news! All the answers can be found there.

    Comment by Gemini — December 22, 2007 @ 5:19 pm

  34. Oh my. I believe I deleted my cue file (I seem to like doing that, damn buggers), will the patcher program also work simply with the bin file? Is the cue file for ToP “standard”? (as in : can be included with the patcher and will work for all ISOs regardless of type and origin). Does it even contain anything of value (for running on an emulator, anyway)?

    Comment by Name-o — December 22, 2007 @ 8:11 pm

  35. Oh and I almost forgot – Thanks Throughhim and Gemini for translating the psx version of the game, and well from what I hear.

    Comment by Name-o — December 22, 2007 @ 8:20 pm

  36. @Name-o:
You could try using the cue maker found on this site: http://www.warezfaq.com/downloads.htm it has a playstation option so I guess that should work.

    Comment by SilverOne — December 22, 2007 @ 8:38 pm

  37. YAY! I hope I can finish patching the game and putting it on my PSP before I leave that day. What time are you planing on the patch coming out that day?

    Comment by Drkirby — December 22, 2007 @ 8:48 pm

  38. Or you could just copy the following into notepad and rename the saved file .cue:

    FILE “MyDiscImage.bin” BINARY
    TRACK 01 MODE2/2352
    INDEX 01 00:00:00

This is a standard single track cue file for Playstation/Mode2 data.

    Comment by Chip — December 22, 2007 @ 8:48 pm

  39. I had the missing .cue problem once and the manual solution didn’t work (Well, it worked but with no audio in the FMVs) It still remains a mistery to me why it didn’t work.

    Comment by SilverOne — December 22, 2007 @ 8:59 pm

  40. @Drkirby: GTM 0:00.

@Name-o: Chip’s example is perfect fot ToP, so use that one.

    Comment by Gemini — December 22, 2007 @ 10:24 pm

  41. So this game is now 9 years old… OMG 😮 That doesn’t make me younger 😦

    Comment by Vashe — December 23, 2007 @ 12:24 am

  42. Excellent work. Tales of Phantasia was awesome (I beat the SNES version and I played the GBA version, but did not finish it). I can’t wait to play it.

Just a quick question – Has anyone made/found any custom Popstation backgrounds and icons (pic1.png and icon0.png)? I’ve been too lazy to try to make some. :p

    Comment by Eric — December 23, 2007 @ 6:54 am

  43. @Eric – Fear not, for I made some. They’ll be included with the patch for my PSP-using brethren. ^o^

    Comment by throughhim413 — December 23, 2007 @ 7:12 am

  44. Wow. That was fast! :p

I just came to post that I threw my own together real fast out of boredom. Nothing too fancy, but I figured it would get the job done. 🙂

    Icon0 – http://img54.imageshack.us/img54/2237/icon0df2.jpg
    Pic1 – http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/1455/pic1el2.jpg

I thought that looked pretty good together using the Popstation “Preview Eboot” feature. I really liked the cast picture on the site (the one with the black background and has all six characters in it). I really wanted to use that one but the icon image covered poor Klarth’s face. :/

Anyway thanks for all the awesome work.

    Comment by Eric — December 23, 2007 @ 7:27 am

  45. I started a ToP album at the PopStation ImagePacks site:

    http://popsdb.twystneko.com/list.php?id=756

Anyone else who wants to add some there go ahead (but really we just need one decent set I suppose :p). I can’t wait to see what the one in the patch looks like. I spent like two minutes on mine so with any effort it should be put to shame, haha.

    Comment by Eric — December 23, 2007 @ 7:46 am

  46. I be making eboot sound (The dream will not die) n nice image for cover XD

    Comment by Blackpanda — December 23, 2007 @ 8:09 am

  47. Maybe it’s just me, but I think that the images I made turned out really well. I’m quite fond of them actually. Like I said, it will be with the patch, so just hang in there for another day and you can check them out. I’m a big fan of simplicity, but I think in this case it really worked out well.

    Comment by throughhim413 — December 23, 2007 @ 4:01 pm

  48. I’m not sure how much longer i can wait XD I even have a little countdown timer on my PC. as for my PS2 it seems to hate playing PS1 games so i guess an emulator will do 🙂

    Comment by throughhim413 — December 24, 2007 @ 5:35 pm

  77. On a side note I got a new video card and the game is running at a lovely 60 fps, what I didn’t get is why when I used the special filters in the video card plugins that I would see the tiles of the ground lol.

    Comment by nebilim — December 24, 2007 @ 5:40 pm

  79. That’s a bug with some textures (like the green border in FFVII) 😮
Just try to tweak some tings and it will be allright (with Pete’s OpenGL2) (if you’re using epsxe).
I finished the game with no major glitches 2 years ago.

    Comment by Vashe — December 24, 2007 @ 5:40 pm

  80. Damn, I wish I were Dahos to be able to traver through time 😦

    XD

    Comment by Vashe — December 24, 2007 @ 5:43 pm

  81. man you only need to wait 15 minutes more what could possibly happen in 15 insignificat minutes?

    Comment by nebilim — December 24, 2007 @ 5:44 pm

  82. For ePSXe, I use Pete’s soft 1.17 (p.e.op.s. soft driver 1.17). For audio, I definitely recommend Eternal. I’m using Eternal SPU Plugin 1.41. Of course, pSX is the easier emulator to use to begin with, but if you can get ePSXe configed right, it works just as well.

    Comment by throughhim413 — December 24, 2007 @ 5:46 pm

  83. just a bit more

    Comment by ZBlalde — December 24, 2007 @ 5:50 pm

  84. Emurayden is a pretty good PSX emulator, I’d recommend it.

    Comment by ForceCube — December 24, 2007 @ 5:51 pm

  85. less than 10 minutes to go !

    Comment by Vashe — December 24, 2007 @ 5:51 pm

  86. I am using pete’s opengl 2.0 plugin, thing about the pete’s soft driver is it is workable but lower quality. I used to use it when my system was weaker. I also used pSX before, it’s a nice emulator just felt more limited.

    Comment by Orion-J — December 24, 2007 @ 5:51 pm

  87. Emurayden = Virtual Station or something like that isn’it ? I wouldn’t recommend it 😮 (no save/load state, no antialiasing,…)

    Comment by Vashe — December 24, 2007 @ 5:53 pm

  88. Never heard of Emurayden, how is it different to pSX or ePSXe

    Comment by Vashe — December 24, 2007 @ 5:59 pm

  100. Dunno if it’s the same, but it probably is.

I don’t like using save states, they make the game too easy. lol

As for the antialiasing, I never really cared about it… but if it bothers you or someone who’s looking for a good emulator, then Emurayden really isn’t a good choice.
