Merry Christmas from Absolute Zero!

We proudly present v1.0 of the Tales of Phantasia PSX translation patch!

All you need to supply is your .bin or .img rip of Tales of Phantasia and the attached custom patcher will take care of the rest. Since it would seem this cannot be overstated, the patched game is fully compatible with real hardware. Please be sure to check the readme, which, among a complete patching procedure and other useful notes, also contains important information regarding emulator and PSP-emulation specific glitches (these are emulator glitches, not patch bugs).

The patch features:
– A complete translation;
– Additional subtitles for skits and the spoken prologue;

Please consult the readme before asking specific questions about patching or related topics.

We thank you for your support and hope that you enjoy Tales of Phantasia PSX!

    Comment by nebilim — December 24, 2007 @ 6:12 pm

  10. That booting glitch is such a small problem that most likely no one will even notice it. The music starts just a little later than it should. It really doesn’t change things that much, so if you don’t notice it, don’t worry about it too much.

  16. Yay the icon and the background are perfect, thank you so much ๐Ÿ˜ฎ (I admit a looked at those pictures only about 0.1 second ^^”””)

    Comment by Vashe — December 24, 2007 @ 7:11 pm

  17. Haha, well, the game is the real focus, I was just curious if people were actually using the icons. Not that they were any extra trouble to make, I just thought they’d be nice to have considering how many people use the PSP these days.

  18. This is very good, although awkward in a few spots.

    Comment by F3NRiR? — December 24, 2007 @ 7:38 pm

  21. Thanks very much for this translation, guys. ๐Ÿ™‚ Having a little problem, though… the dialog text looks stretched in every emulator I’ve tried (example: http://hoimi.us/up/top-ugh.jpg). I got the dialog text to look decent in ePSXe with stretching completely off (http://hoimi.us/up/top-bam.jpg) but it’s really thin, and I’m not sure I want to play like that.

Is there no way to get it to look properly proportionate without using bilinear filtering? :\ I noticed it looks fine here: https://zettaizero.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/news01.png but it’s a small screenshot, so I don’t know.

    Comment by tzzzk — December 24, 2007 @ 7:42 pm

  22. Maybe Gemini can recommend something. He took all the screenshots, so I’m sure he could tell you the setup he has. I never had a stretching issue with emulators though, so I’m not sure.

    Comment by Alan — December 24, 2007 @ 8:06 pm

  24. I appear to have fixed my issue by using 1024×768 or 1280×960 fullscreen. I do wish I could play windowed, but pSX doesn’t have a windowed resolution option, and at least it looks fine now.

Still, any suggestions are appreciated. ๐Ÿ™‚

  26. I see throughhim413 loaded a custom Icon and background on http://popsdb.twystneko.com/list.php?id=756 site for when you convert the game to play on your PSP (which Im doing right away) Cool :D. I’ll use both of those for my ISO. Cant wait to play!! ๐Ÿ˜€

    Comment by Flashfactor7 — December 24, 2007 @ 8:35 pm

  27. Great work guys, it looks ace. I’ve noticed two minor problems though:

I just got to Morrison’s house and in the scene where Chester shows up (at least I think it was, I should have taken a screenshot), someone says “then” instead of “than”. Maybe that’s just an Americanism I’m not familiar with though…

The other thing, with pSX, every time I start the game up with the controller set to Dual Shock, the tech names screen doesn’t respond to any button presses. I have to switch to regular controller, reset the game, make my selection, then I can switch back to Dual Shock. Has anyone else come across this or is it just me?

Anyway, merry Christmas. I hope to see more of Gemini’s excellent work with Mother 3 ๐Ÿ˜€

    Comment by Fudgehat — December 24, 2007 @ 8:38 pm

  28. @Fudgehat: that’s probably an issue with pSX. On real hardware the ability screen has no problems when the analog mode is enabled.

@tzzzk: if you are going to play in in pSX, be sure to enable the interpolation or it will look very bad. If you switched to a plugin based emulator, use P.E.Op.S. Soft Driver with interpolation enabled and it will look pretty good at 640×480 with window stretching.

    Comment by Gemini — December 24, 2007 @ 9:02 pm

  29. Wonderful. Works great (well I’m not too picky about strechings and what not. it’s emulator-related anyway, not patch-related). Thanks.

  39. The game crashed twice for me on my PSP (I was using my default Pops, which is 3.52) when I tried to leave the first city. I exited out and restarted with Pops 3.51 and I haven’t hit a single snag or far.

Amazing work. I really am thankful for all the effort.

    Comment by Eric — December 24, 2007 @ 11:44 pm

  40. I’ve been using 3.71 (I think…) and it didn’t cause me any problems. Obviously the different versions of Pops will have different issues. It’s emulation, so none of them are perfect, but I’m glad 3.51 is working for you.

    Comment by throughhim413 — December 24, 2007 @ 11:46 pm

  41. Popstation seems to be a little bugged, eh. O_o

    Comment by Gemini — December 24, 2007 @ 11:48 pm

  42. Well Popstation is a little weird. Some games won’t run correctly unless you are using a certain version (like Final Fantasy 8 had issues with 3.5-anything so I had to install a 3.40 Popstation and it runs perfect in that).

Over-all though Popstation is a very reliable emulator. I haven’t gone any higher than 3.52 m33-4 myself. I don’t see the reason to. ToP is working fine in 3.51 which is all I’m concerned with. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Comment by Eric — December 24, 2007 @ 11:52 pm

  43. I’m using the 3.72 prxs and everything is fine as well.

Minor note though: is anyone else having problems with customizing controlls? I swapped O/X in the config menu, but the changes aren’t reflected when I play the game (cancel is still X and accept is still O). I’m not sure if this is a bug or if I’m just doing something wrong…

    Comment by kuma-iro — December 24, 2007 @ 11:55 pm

  44. Those control changes apply ONLY to battle. Everywhere else in the game, they remain unchanged. That’s something that’s built into the game, so it’s not a patch issue.

    Comment by Vashe — December 25, 2007 @ 2:34 am

  48. Did you check if that bug is also present for the unpatched game?

    Comment by Gemini — December 25, 2007 @ 2:43 am

  49. I don’t think that’s anything our patch should have caused, but I’m really not sure. I’ve never seen that happen before, so I’m not entirely sure. We’ll look into it in any case.

  50. is there a forum where minor bugs can be reported ? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

    Comment by Vashe — December 25, 2007 @ 2:50 am

  51. Probably the best way is to send an e-mail to either of the addresses listed in the readme.

    Comment by throughhim413 — December 25, 2007 @ 2:55 am

  52. No, I’m sorry, when I played the original japanese version that bug didn’t occur. But I only played it completely once and I assume this bug is very rare and difficult to reproduce so I might have missed it.

    Comment by Vashe — December 25, 2007 @ 4:02 am

  53. You could always use my forums for reporting bugs. I guess it’s probably better than email since everybody can read what bugs have been already posted.

  54. Ehrm, maybe not the best place to ask, but where do I find the Tech. ring? And how many are there? And also, how do I use gameshark with an emulator? :$

  56. @Artan
If you’re using ePSXe, just download PSX emulation cheater, it’s very simple to use and works fine with ePSXe.
As for the tech. ring… sadly, IMO, you’ll find it quite late in the game (I got it after 9 hours).

  58. I’ve been messing around with the gfx settings in ePSXE ( using Pete’s opengl plugin ) and … has anyone figured out the ‘perfect’ setting for it yet?

Currently using this, which currently looks quite good:

    640 x 480 (WINDOWED), aspect ratio on, No (0) Texture Filtering, Hi-Res Texture: 2xSal, Compatability: 4,3,4

    Comment by Atloshan — December 25, 2007 @ 3:42 pm

  60. Actually, scratch that, using the P.E.Op.S. Soft Driver (for mainly 2D games) looks much better with ToP (certain stretching modes like Scale 2x, Super 2xSal, Super Eagle look great).

Awesome job translating this amazing game! Wooho!

But do you know if the game is only freezing there or even in other places ? (So I’ll have to play without any of Arche’s spell :/)

    Comment by Vashe — December 26, 2007 @ 8:03 am

  68. I was the tester who played the translated game on the PSP… and I can assure you those crashes are 100% random. I had about 10 of them during the whole gameplay (40 hours) with different spells… I think there aren’t “safe” spells… you just have to save often and pray. ๐Ÿ˜›
And, trust me, this will make the Moria Cave even more obnoxious!

    Congratulations ^_^

    Comment by Zappa — December 26, 2007 @ 9:41 am

  75. First of all I’d like to say this is a killer 1337 translation. I enjoy playing it and think it’s fun to enjoy.

Could ya please do something about the dialog font? It’s so small and my eyes are like hurting from squinting to read it. Even my brother and dad thinks it’s a bad font as far as being hard to read.

Secondly, when I back out of the title screen the game crashes. To help clarify the bug in question, I’m laying the game on my Xbox using PCSXbox v1.3 and also something worth mentioning is the fact that I only see the New Game selection and the rest of them are hidden.

Also, when the movie finishes playing the game crashes the Xbox before getting to the title screen and I have to power cycle. I assume this would crash an emulator as well, seeing as this emu is an Xbox port of PCSX?

Has anyone else had any trouble along these lines? Just curious. I suppose I should test it on real hardware and see what happens.

    Comment by Squall — December 26, 2007 @ 1:26 pm

  76. Squall, the font is not going to be changed. It read totally fine on TV and in 640×480+bilinear filter on PC, so if it reads badly on the XBox… just don’t use it.

As for the bugs, the original PCSX box has only a few bugs with the original game, so it’s pretty odd that it has those errors on the XBox, unless they screwed up part of the emulation core (shit can happen when porting). If I were you I’d play it on some other platform (which I already did, actually :P).

    Comment by darkcloudy — December 26, 2007 @ 3:06 pm

  80. In regard to the spell crashes on the PSP, I have had absolutely no crashes in that regard. I’m not sure what causes them, but it’s not an issue I’ve experienced myself. I’m all done with Moria and I’ve not had a single PSP glitch up to this point.

    Comment by throughhim413 — December 26, 2007 @ 3:20 pm

  81. @darkcloudy: no, we are not planning to work on a new game. I’m probably gonna complete a couple of my older projects before moving to brand new stuff (unless I get bothered of the old :P).

    Comment by Gemini — December 26, 2007 @ 3:30 pm

  82. The spell freezing glitch on the PSP happens with Tales of Destiny as well. It seems to happen totally randomly, and I’ve even tried different versions of popstation with no results. Possibly a problem with how the spell animations appear, since it’s right before the animation plays that the freezing happens.

    Comment by Tug_Darken — December 26, 2007 @ 4:29 pm

  83. For the moment, I got multiple freezes with the Lighting Blade spell, I just disabled that spell and the game doesn’t seem to freeze anymore (except for the fight with Undine… I beat her with epsxe ^^”). BTW I have a PsP Slim with 3.71 M33-4 Firmware…

    Comment by Vashe — December 26, 2007 @ 6:19 pm

    Comment by throughhim413 — December 26, 2007 @ 6:30 pm

  85. Hello There!!. Finally i could download your patch and the only thing that i could say it,s that you have done a wonderful job with the translation. I noticed that the name of the attacks and spells are much more closer to the japanese phonetic style (Meteor Swaaarm!!).

Until now i don,t have any bugs in my game. Thanks for the translations and enjoy the Holydays guys.

    Comment by buvk — December 26, 2007 @ 7:31 pm

  87. I’m using an original fat PSP as well and still get the freezing problems. I don’t think PSP model has anything to do with it, and it seems to happen on at least most versions of popstation (3.71, 3.52, 3.40, 3.03).

    Comment by Tug_Darken — December 26, 2007 @ 8:53 pm

  88. Through, should we ask people to post their problems on a PSP-related forum or something? ๐Ÿ˜› There are a ton of comments on that damn emulator. xD

    Comment by Gemini — December 26, 2007 @ 10:32 pm

  89. Yeah, it might not be a bad idea. But even if there are problems with Pops, what can we do about it? It’s an emulator issue. I think the most important thing for any PSP user to do is to make sure that their Disc-Load Speed is set to Normal, not to Fast. But there are clearly a lot of emulator bugs that extend beyond that and even if we know about them, can we actually do anything to fix them?

    Comment by throughhim413 — December 26, 2007 @ 10:36 pm

  90. While I know nothing of the issue other than what’s obvious from seeing it happen (random freezes on spells just before the animation occurs), I don’t doubt that there’s a way to fix it through a patch. Of course, I’m not trying to say that you’re obligated to do so, just saying that a fix is probably possible.

    Comment by Tug_Darken — December 26, 2007 @ 10:56 pm

  91. Yes, it could be possible to fix them somehow, but the problem is that I don’t have a Psp at the moment. ๐Ÿ˜› And asking Through to go through (pun not intended) a debugging session on his Psp would be just crazy ’cause I’d need to ask him too many things for each step. >_>

    Comment by Gemini — December 27, 2007 @ 12:00 am

  92. im wondering, how come u guys decided to translate the psx version and not the psp version?

    Comment by ZBlade — December 27, 2007 @ 12:24 am

  93. Because as Gemini stated above, he doesn’t have a PSP. We put up a donation link, but we’re nowhere near buy-Gemini-a-PSP levels of money.

    Comment by throughhim413 — December 27, 2007 @ 12:30 am

  94. I suggest you to use the popsconverter, is better than popstation and is more usuable, also there are some bugs in the games that were converted by popstation because the program is incomplete or so the say, but well, it doesnยดt matter go wild everyone playing your TOP in your PSP

    Comment by darkcloudy — December 27, 2007 @ 3:20 am

  95. Hey there, guys. Nice work. I’ve held off on playing the Super Famicom and Gameboy Advance versions in hopes that the PlayStation version would be translated. Thanks a bunch. Too bad you’re not adding the PSP version’s sprites to the game, but I shouldn’t get greedy now.

I thought I should give you a heads-up that a person / group named Elazul did exactly what you said not to by dumping an ISO of Tales of Phantasia, patching it, RARing it, and uploading it to isoHunt. They also had the nerve to thank “The Pantheon” and not you guys for translating it. I don’t know if there’s anything you can do about it, but I thought I should let you know anyway.

The original game isn’t even $20 on eBay, so I see no reason (aside from a total lack of patience) to download the game. Maybe I’m just preaching to the choir, though…

    Comment by DarksideX — December 27, 2007 @ 5:28 am

  96. Yeah, we know about that group. But considering where they uploaded it, there isn’t much that we can do about it. We’ll pursue those kinds of uploads where we can, but when its out of our control, it’s frustrating. We’ve managed to get one torrent pulled down so far, but I doubt we can get all of them.

  97. Correction: The torrent was uploaded to The Pirate Bay, not isoHunt. I should check the specifics before pointing fingers. Sorry.

Also, the $20 auction is over, but another $25 one is still ongoing for anyone who hasn’t obtained a legitimate copy yet. eBay link: here.

  98. Ah, I see. It’s a bit of a pissoff to see people openly disobeying your requests less than two days after you publish your work… I’ve seen worse though, like people trying to obtain support for a leaked private beta patch, then deny that they got the patch through illicit means.

Anyway, this probably isn’t really any of my business right now, but do you have an ETA for the Akumajo Dracula X patch? The Romhacking.net topic has been stagnant for a few months, so I’m left wondering…

  99. Been playing since release. The translations reads nice and smoothly, i like it.
I’m a bit of a forum lurker, but i never really post much. I’ve been reading threads saying this translation was rushed, and would be very “literal”. In my opinion it just means, what it says in japanese you are getting in english. I prefer that to be honest. I’ve seen cases in games before where the translation was not literal and it can really ruin/change some scenes. In any case i like your approach. Well done.

About the whole rushed thing. It’s nonsense in my opinion. Variable Width Font, Skits Subtitling, an ability selector. All these things show off to me as not being rushed whatsoever. The hacking is really well done, i’m a bit of a perfectionist myself when doing projects ( i’m a web/software developer ). All i can say is. It shows that, that same amount of effort has gone into this.

So, in closing i’d like to say. You ( your group ) have no reason for being bashed on any of these points. In my opinion you dedicated all of your time on one project, when you do that. It tends to be done faster.

For those playing this game on an emulator. Here’s a few settings for you that will make this game run very nicely.

First of i use a plugin emulator like ( epsxe, or psxeven ) For ToP i use psxeven. With the translated bin image ( no CD access required )
    and the following plugins.

Sound: Eternal SPU Plugin ersion 1.50

You do need somewhat of a decent computer to make these sound settings work for you. If it’s too slow you can always change the setting Audio out Method to:
SPUAsync Simple ( instead of smooth )
Or not use SPUAsync at all. However it does provide the best sound output.

Video: P.e.o.p.s Soft Driver version 1.17

I recommend Peops for any game not featuring 3d graphics ( like FF7, FF8, Parasite Eve, Resident Evil etc ) for those games i recommend Pete’s OpenGL2 driver, provided you have a good graphics card. But for 2d games peops simply blows that plugin out of the water. Windowed mode 640 x 480 looks the best with Tales of Phantasia, although i don’t like looking at a small window i usually bump it up to 1152 x 864. It does get slightly more blurry, unless you use an unstretched filter like HQ3X unstretched. It’s a bit of a game trying to get the right resolution with filter going. I can vouch for 640 x 480 with HQ2X though. If your pc can’t handle the HQ2X filter you can always go for something like 2x sai or supereagle. It will also look nicely ( play around with it a bit ).

The images with settings will stay uploaded.

In any case, thanks again for all your hard work. It really shows ๐Ÿ™‚

  100. @DarksideX: Yeah, that/those asshole/s didn’t even bother to boot the patched game, sure like hell. They just referred to use using “The Pantheon” because that’s how the subforum on my site is called like that. So not only they are assholes, they are also total idiots.

For the ETA on Dracula X, I really dunno. For some reason I can’t go back on the game, probably because I’m afraid of the HUGE work necessary to sync dialogues with the Japanese dub. >_>

  108. So once again I ask if it would be possible for you guys to share how I can take the sprites from my PSP version and implement them in your PSX translated version? It would be really awesome. If not could you point me in the right direction on how to find out how to do it?

  111. Awesome translation, great work and thanks a lot for all your efforts. I wonder, are you considering any other projects for the future? Possible translations of the other Tales games that got the “no ur 2d u stay in japan lol” treatment?

    Comment by abagapopcorn — January 4, 2008 @ 2:02 am

  112. @Vader: you can report the errors here: http://www.crosser.altervista.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=127

@abagapopcorn: at the moment we don’t have any plans on future Tales projects.

  114. Just wondering… Are you working on a psp sprite patcher?

Anyway with psp sprites or not i can finally enjoy the game.I still can’t believe it that you translated the game so fast!!!

    Comment by F3NRiR? — January 8, 2008 @ 4:06 pm

  115. Seriously, I wish people would please stop pestering them for a PSP sprite patch. If you’ve read the readme or posts on his blog you’ll see they don’t have plans to do this anytime soon.

  118. Hey!! I’d like to thank you for all the hard work you’ve put into translating/hacking ToP. I’d like to submit two bug reports I’ve noticed when playing on a US v6 PS2 with the bios version: SCPH-30001R, unmodded. The game crashes when pausing during battle, right after pushing start, and it also crashed when I tried to use spectacles during battle, right after pushing circle to select it. I’ve used gummis in battle before so I think it was just the spectacles that caused it to crash. I thought you’d like to know, :D. I’ve only played 5 hours into the game, and I haven’t tried other tools in battles, so I’m not sure if the spectacles are the only thing that makes the crash occur. Again, thank you for the patch :D.

  119. good work people! It’s amazing and nice to see that not all trans teams are gone ๐Ÿ™‚ keep up the good work.

    Comment by MemphiS — January 20, 2008 @ 7:19 pm

  120. For those playing on a PS2 using the PSX Code Archive CD that comes with the Gameshark2 V2, you can bypass the crashing I mentioned in my earlier post by selecting a game, make sure all codes are off (0 codes active), then starting the game using the “With Codes” option, instead of the “Without Codes” option. I’ve only experienced a single issue where the graphics and sound corrupted right after finishing a battle, but I think it was caused by a scratch on the cd. It only happened once in the 23 hours or so I’ve played. I just wanted to post this info. in case there’s anyone else that needs it, though I’m probably the only one nowadays, lol.

  121. […] After years of waiting, the fan translation of Tales of Phantasia PS1 is ready! I tested it for good and can assure you that the patch not only works but it is completely compatible with the PSP, so look for a Japanese version of the game (I suppose it won’t come out cheap for a while, but several store owners are still selling it for its real value that is pretty low since there are tons of copies still around), grab your favourite PSX converter and start playing on the go! 122. Thank you for this patch. I’ve been playing this game on ePSXe just about every day between studying for university. If my marks are shit this semester, this is the reason why. This game is wicked fun, and the translation and hacking are top-knotch.

  123. First of all THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! I have been waiting to play this TOP version in english for over 6 years.
I have a question about burning the patched image. I applied the patch to the .bin file, I checked using epsxe emulator and it works perfect; however when I tried to burn the image to play in my console it doesnt works; I checked the burned disc and there are some folder and files (DAT folder, dummy.bin, readme.pdf,etc). I already tried using ImgBurn and Nero… It always get the .cue file instead of the patched .bin, could be this the problem? how can I burn the disc correctly..? please, I want to play the game in my console.. Thanks in advance..
