Subtitles and Menu Cleaning

This will be a quick update, we just want to show off some new pictures and assure people that we’re still moving right along.

EDIT: Updated the subtitles. They now have a better border.

As with any voiced game, there are portions which contain voice, but no text. Our goal is to make sure that all of the important story events are understood by the player. In order to do that, Kingcom has produced some subtitles for scenes that need them. You can see them at work in Vrtra’s intro. I realize that they may look hard to read on a computer screen, but rest assured they are perfectly readable on the DS screen. In the second shot, you can see a mostly finalized weapon screen shot. Since the menu translation is mostly complete, Kingcom has been working on cleaning them up, which can be a tedious and painful job. But as you can see, he has turned that kana-based nightmare into a beautiful English layout.

I have been working mainly on the script itself, which has been plenty of fun. The beginning is always a challenge, since I have to come up with creative terms for many of the specialized terms related to ToI’s plot. Most of these have appeared at the point I’m at, but you can never say you have them all finalized until the game is done. Oh, one last thing I want to mention! People have asked about the Versus Style in the past. As many of you know, in order to get Versus, you have to play the Wireless mode which of course requires a friend with Tales of Innocence. We recognize that you probably aren’t going to meet many people playing ToI, so we are making the Versus style available WITHOUT the need to get on the Wireless. Cool, huh? Until next time… ^_^

  1. You are gods of the translation world.

  2. once again you guys surprise me, to think there is a translation group that would go as far as to create subtitles for the voided only scenes.

    you really are awesome!!!

  3. SWEET sweet…. yays i cants wait but TH its the middle of september when the most important announcement coming…i cant wait to see the other game you are doing

  4. Er… unless it’s REALLY easy to read in motion and is just somewhat difficult because it’s a still, I would suggest putting an outline around the font and/or making it bigger. An outline is probably a good idea regardless, as it guarantees contrast between the text and the background.

    Also, “Great Hooker”? Seriously?? šŸ˜›

Additionally, have you considered using text figures? The tiny font in ToI appears to use some variant of it. This one is very opinion-based though… some people love them, some people don’t. But the numbers you have look like they’re large enough to make it work well.

  5. Great Hooker is what it said in Japanese. It meant, I assume, that you could throw a mean hook with them. Still, the name made me laugh in translation, so I left it alone for the time being.

I don’t have any comments on the other two matters, those are really better left to Kingcom.

  8. Good call on enabling the versus style. It’s also nice to see you guys are able to sub those cutscenes like that.

    Comment by Majutsuko — September 14, 2008 @ 4:23 am

  9. Many complained about the readability, so I’ve added an outline to it: http://imagehoster.us/uploads/22d1ded218.png

And just to clarify, you still have to discover how to get the Versus style!

  10. You’re. I’m Italian and I’m looking forward to playing this game. Oh and I want to thank you for the great translation of Top: the ps1 versione gave an unexpected deepness to the plot. I’m sure this work will be al least at the samel level of the last one.

    Comment by Rimario90 — September 14, 2008 @ 5:53 am

  11. You two are doing an astounding job, I am truly pleased to hear that the versus style will be avilable without online play, and the subs look sweet.

This fantranslation looks far more polished than the majority of the official releases, I am truly looking forward to see more.

  12. awesome hey throughhim did you make a remake for tales of destiny one ps2?

  13. Nice! Outline looks great!

And sweet! I’m not familiar with how you’re supposed to get Versus Style other than that it involves wireless… but does this mean you’re adding in a new puzzle/sidequest/whatever? Pretty awesome.

  14. You are awesome, guys! I can’t wait playing this game..^^
Btw will you just make a rom for ToI or even a gamecard for the DS?

    Comment by Soeren — September 14, 2008 @ 1:28 pm

  15. As expected, you both are doing a phenomenal job. Keep it up!

    Comment by zurra — September 14, 2008 @ 2:20 pm

  16. It will be released as a patch. You can use that patch to modify a rom (which we will not be providing). The patched game will be playable on flash carts or emulation.

  17. Scent Tracer is a bad goof, especially after ToP’s Saint weapons, you should know it’s Saint by now. Ange even has a weapon called Evil Hunter, so spot the symbolism.

The description says it chases down evil people and cuts them down. But before you put down just Saint, it should probably be Saint’s Tracer or Saintly Tracer. Saint Tracer means it traces saints.

    Comment by gogs — September 14, 2008 @ 6:01 pm

  18. Will you still be able to get versus through the normal method aswell? My friend is allso lookin forward to this translation so I will be able to get it the real way

    Comment by Fabre — September 14, 2008 @ 6:31 pm

  19. @gogs: You’re right, I made a mistake. My apologies. When I was initially translating the menu, the file was unsorted, so I didn’t have the benefit of being able to read the description nor had I attained the item (or any of Ange’s later weapons) in-game. Saint Tracer was the first thing that came to mind, obviously. However, without any context, I brushed that off as nonsense (as you said) and went with something that at least made sense conceptually. It turns out, in this case, that I guessed wrong.

As always, I believe I stated that these screenshots represent a work in progress and that nothing shown here is final. Screenshots, as you know, are mostly showing off hacking and ASM work. The items and item descriptions will all be double and triple checked before the final version. If you wanted to, it would be easy to find a thousand mistakes in these screens, but what we are showing here is not and was never meant to represent the final translation. Oh, but just so there is no confusion, I’m not claiming the final version will be perfect. I’m human, so there will be mistakes.

@Fabre: Of course the normal way to obtain it will still work. We just wanted to make it available to everyone in case they didn’t have any friends with ToI.

  20. just out of curiousity, how many percent(s) of story scripts you have translated?

so far very good, I’ll try to visit this blog once a day.

  21. Every update I find here makes my fingers itch more to play this. You guys are doing an awesome job. I have so much kudos to give for the fact that you are doing this in your own spare time when you could be out doing other things. This project is a huge undertaking, as any rpg would be. And I know all of us rpg fanatics are VERY appreciative. This is almost as big of a deal as someone translating a japan only final fantasy game.

    Keep up the great work!!!

  22. Just stumbled onto this project and I think it looks gorgeous. Stopped playing the game a few months ago, just got too tired of reading kanji so I’m definitely looking forward to picking it up again whenever you finish. So exciting – this project and the Mother 3 project almost completing too.

  23. I must say you guys are awesome, and I just can’t wait to play this. and thx for doing it for us

  24. First of all, amazing job with the patch. ^^ It looks stunning. I’m just amazed at how professional this looks and how fast the project is going.

Second… what is a good way to actually play this on my DS? What’s a good program? I only know of the R4DS and they’re sold out in all the places I looked and it seems like they don’t have GBA support. It’d be nice if it had GBA support too since I plan on playing the Mother 3 patch… šŸ˜›

  25. GBA devices use Slot-2, in order to play ToI, you’ll need a Slot-1 device. For Slot-1, I would recommend the CycloDS. It’s the flashcart that I have, which I have yet to experience any problems with. Generally the same sites that sell Slot-1 devices will have some Slot-2 ones as well, but I don’t own one, so I can’t recommend one for you.

  27. Updates usually occur every week or two. I’m always surprised when people start thinking that we’ve quit in that time.

    Comment by Kaji — September 19, 2008 @ 9:14 pm

  30. You guys are seriously the epitome of win. I don’t think there are many groups out there that would actually sub textless scenes.

    It’s amazing.

  31. “Oh, but just so there is no confusion, Iā€™m not claiming the final version will be perfect. Iā€™m human, so there will be mistakes.”

Is there maybe some way you could say that so as to not shake confidence in the final product? Will you have editors? Will you take the 10 minutes to to the proper research when translating instead of guessing in the future? I mean, if you Macecre the final product, it’s a disservice to the fans and the game, even if it’s an unintentional result of your fallibility.

I applaud your efforts; I just wish that someone pointing out mistakes didn’t make you use tautologies about the human condition as some kind of excuse. To err is human, obviously; just saying so doesn’t free you from learning from your missteps and working to prevent their recurrence.

    Comment by Thundercles — September 25, 2008 @ 4:44 am

  32. It wasn’t my intention to hide behind the “I’m only human” excuse. As for guessing, I did the best I could with what I had and, like with all things I was uncertain about, marked the file to be reexamined later. For me, the easiest way to deal with translation corrections is to look at it later with fresh eyes. I was aware that it was not correct, that’s why I wanted to look at it again when I DID have the context. My point is that it doesn’t matter if a mistake was there a month ago, whether it was there a week ago, or whether it will be there a month from now – what matters is that it gets corrected before the final version. My statement that you quoted was not an attempt to say “I don’t have to edit because I’m human”, it was to say that even professional products have mistakes and it is unlikely that Tales of Innocence will be the first perfect translation ever created. However, that certainly does not mean that I don’t want to get it as close as I can to perfect.

I welcome constructive criticism, I consider it to my benefit and to the benefit of the final product. What I wanted to communicate was that it is not yet time nor is this the place to make such criticisms. There will be an extensive editing and testing process, and yes, by people other than myself. These screenshots are not yet ready to be examined for editing, doing so is a waste of time – there are far too many mistakes to deal with at this point. The point of the screenshots is to show off the in-progress hacking and translation. Every text box could be just as easily be filled with “Hello World”; we just wanted to give people a taste of what the game might actually look like, not to show anything final. If I gave the impression that I was not dedicated to the improvement of my translation, then I failed to communicate my message effectively.

  33. only a question
will you put subtitltes in middle of the mystic arte?
    i mean example
whe ruca starts his transformation he says something, will you traslate that too?

    Comment by ruca — September 25, 2008 @ 10:18 pm

  34. Well said. It seemed like you had made an error in the process of translating and then said that some amount of error is unpreventable, which was disconcerting to say the least. It sounds like you’re working on the appearance rather than the translation at this point, which makes any errors contained therein understandable.

    Comment by Thundercles — September 26, 2008 @ 1:06 pm

  35. keep it up!!!
we’ll be waiting for the release šŸ˜€
