An Update!?

Can you believe it!? After an extended silence, a Tales of Innocence update has come at long last! New screens and some information about when we expect this project to be complete.

So, we’ve been silent for a few weeks now. It wasn’t intentional, just kind of how things worked out. Kingcom and I have been busy with Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia lots of real life things. Progress on Tales of Innocence has admittedly been rather slow since the last posted update. Some sections of story, a few scattered skits, and more menu revisions have been the main focus during this time.

So, here are our screens for this week. The left screen gives a shot of the menu in battle, which I think is looking great. The right screen shows off the Strategy window, which I don’t believe we’ve shown up until now. One of the biggest things to notice in both images is the bottom screen. As was suggested, we have changed the names to match the rest of the text in the window. The layout of the lower window has also been altered slightly to try and fill the space more effectively. Below we have one more screen, but it’s nothing different. The reason for showing this screen is that we want your input. Do you prefer the vertical layout as shown above or do you prefer the horizontal layout shown below? Let us know if you have any suggestions for the layout of the lower screen!

Finally, I want to talk a little about this project and when it will be released. I know people are excited about this, but we aren’t willing to rush it. We initially wanted to shoot for a release by the end of the year, but that is looking highly unlikely. To provide the highest quality at release, we really want to take our time both with the translating, the hacking, and the testing. I release that many people are used to fast paced, incremental release of patches from places like GBAtemp, but that simply isn’t how we operate. Do not expect Tales of Innocence to be released until early 2009. We thank you for your understanding and hope that you will still look forward to the final product. We assure you, it will be worth the wait!

Version Kaji

Version thedicemaster

Please note that these are shopped, so we can’t promise that we can reproduce them perfectly in-game.

  1. Great! The battle MenΓΉ looks great, good job. About the layout i prefer the vertical one. Keep it up.

  2. Great news! I’m glad you guys got some work done :]

I prefer the top screen. It’s much easier to read.

Thanks your efforts, and good luck! πŸ˜€

  3. Good to hear that we might get it early 09. My psp will keep me busy till the patch is released. πŸ˜›

    Comment by thepinkone — October 25, 2008 @ 1:39 pm

  4. I prefer the horizontal layout. For the vertical layout, my eyes tend to jump around because of the gap between the two rows (the diagonal name column to the actual name). Either way, it’s still easy to read, but the horizontal layout seems to flow more fluently. In other words, it doesn’t seem “forced”. But, it is a bit clustered compared to the vertical layout. Great job with the update guys. Hope you guys had a nice week playing castl– being busy with your lives. πŸ˜›

  5. The top screen looks better and easier to read IMO.

  6. looking awesome as usual I prefer the at the bottom, awesome job guys I would still be interested if it was summer of 09 because this freaking awesome. now after tales of innocence you guys should check this game out Archaic Sealed Heat the graphic are awesome, I have a decent knowledge of the japanese language but not a whole lot a menuse tranlation would do good

    Comment by Sora — October 25, 2008 @ 2:22 pm

  7. I prefer the horizontal lay out. I really love how you guys are doing this and putting much work on it.

    Comment by YumChoc — October 25, 2008 @ 3:17 pm

  8. Vertical. It makes the HP/TP status easier to read, since the name text isn’t scrunched up next to it.

    Comment by Wilhelm — October 25, 2008 @ 3:22 pm

  9. I preffer the vertical layout : D

    Comment by happip — October 25, 2008 @ 3:23 pm

  10. Oh and also I thought of a suggestion. How about just removing the ‘name’ and have the names of the characters just remain there? I think it would be better and you’ll have more spaces. Just my opinion though.. ^.^

    Comment by YumChoc — October 25, 2008 @ 3:25 pm

  11. Actually, removing “Name” was one of the first thing we tried. Unfortunately, it left the whole screen feeling very empty. Kingcom and I weren’t comfortable with how much blank space there was.

    Comment by throughhim413 — October 25, 2008 @ 3:32 pm

  12. I really apreciate your iniciative and your work is just awesome!
Have you guys thought about becoming official translators/editors of some game company? =D
Anyway, I prefer the vertical layout as shown in the first pictures.

    Comment by Funchal99 — October 25, 2008 @ 3:38 pm

  13. Go for the vertical one, yo.

The horizontal one makes the “name” portion look out of place.

    Comment by Anonymous — October 25, 2008 @ 4:06 pm

  14. About the update: sorry if I’m nitpicking, but I can’t help but read “battlemenu” at the top of the in-battle screens. Couldn’t it use a little more space maybe? >_>

That said, the rest of the menus looks perfect. *_*

About the release date part: I have so many games to play already, early 2009 ends up being just the right time. Don’t rush it, great games require great translations and great translations require time to get done. πŸ™‚

    Comment by Square711 — October 25, 2008 @ 4:21 pm

  15. Definitely horizontal, I think. Otherwise, the “Name”s mess with the visual space, what with those diagonal columns, plus the names appearing on the second line as a result doesn’t help.

Or, another idea… remove “Name”, but center their names in the whitespace? (I assume it should be a simple sprite movement hack + some bitmap trickery.) Here’s a rough mockup:

I also touched up a few of the letters… not sure how good they came out though, as I didn’t really notice the existence of the third shading color until later.

    Comment by Kaji — October 25, 2008 @ 5:09 pm

  16. Though, actually, I’m not sure if it can be centered between the lines like that. If not, I would imagine it would still look good aligned with the top row.

    Comment by Kaji — October 25, 2008 @ 5:11 pm

  17. Square711: The graphic (and others of its kind) was like that in the original, we didn’t change it. There’s another pixel between words, but it’s really clear, you’re right with that. I can look into it if it’s possible to extend the gap, but I can’t promise anything. The game has quite a lot in VRAM, so I don’t know if I have some space left (or maybe I’m lucky and don’t need any extra tiles, but things usually happen to be unfortunate…).

Kaji: The names are simple tilemapped graphics, so I can basically move them around however I like. Some of them would need additional space if they are centered between the lines, but that shouldn’t be a problem on the bottom screen. I don’t really like the look of it, but none of the options are really optimal in my opinion, so we’ll have to see what’s most famous and use that.

    Comment by Kingcom — October 25, 2008 @ 5:33 pm

  18. horizontal, just looks right …
the vertical one looks … too strange …and uncomfortable … def. horizontal
and take you time with the translation, you guys have lives to live too ^^
    pre-happy Halloween!

    Comment by Pioggia — October 25, 2008 @ 5:59 pm

  19. Yay, an update! *_* Anyway… I prefer the vertical layout. IMHO it is most comfortable. xP

  23. Such an amazing job…

You know what? Just keep it up. It’ll be done when the right time comes, no? Just knowing this keeps my hope filled up.

Well, I wnat to make a sugestion… Are you thinking about working on any of the PSP Tales? I think that you’d do an amazing job with “Tales of Phantasia Full Voice Edition”, or even “Tales of Rebirth”…

    Stay well,

  24. wow, one of my mates told me some guys were doing a ToI translation but i didn’t know it would looks so professional
    keep up the great work
As for layout, go for Horizontal, vertical looks forced and, well ugly

    Comment by Woody — October 26, 2008 @ 5:12 am

  25. KC: no problem, it’s not that big of a deal anyway. If it ends up being too much work or impossible to do, just leave it as is. We all know it’s two separate words anyway. πŸ˜›

  31. I like dicemaster’s. πŸ˜‰

    Comment by Wilhelm — October 26, 2008 @ 1:44 pm

    Comment by AleX_Magnus — October 26, 2008 @ 3:35 pm

  33. Yes, definitly the one from thedicemaster’s ^_^. Looks better and organised.

    Comment by YumChoc — October 26, 2008 @ 4:02 pm

  34. great job guys!!!

I like how much you want to make this traslation not just perfect, but actually giving us options to choose from, this is just too awesome =D

I have to admit that the thedicemaster’s one looks better(but the others are nice too), but you are doing all the work, so anything you decide we will hapilly accept 8D

    Comment by IamYourFather — October 26, 2008 @ 5:13 pm

  35. I prefer thedicemaster’s when I saw the first two you had shown, I liked neither because they were both a little convoluted and having the text for “Name” is a bit unnecessary and redundant, so in general, I think it is a lot better to remove Name from the menus

    Comment by armaniboi — October 26, 2008 @ 9:12 pm

  36. Yep, definitely the best by far.

    Comment by Kaji — October 26, 2008 @ 10:04 pm

  37. thedicemaster

    Comment by happip — October 27, 2008 @ 8:46 am

  38. thedicemaster’s version is definitely the best. I’m really don’t think that writing “name” is necessary.

  39. How to download patch

    Comment by catjaja — October 27, 2008 @ 11:48 am

  40. Here’s another vote for thedicemaster.

    Comment by aimless — October 27, 2008 @ 11:48 am

  41. thedicemaster’s is by far my favorite. But if that’s not possible… I’d have to go for horizontal. In the vertical version if their name is short–like Iria’s–the gap between “Name” and “Iria” is really awkward, I think.

    Comment by Kelocena — October 27, 2008 @ 11:49 am

  42. thedicemaster’s is the best one.
I liked how the level and EXP got centered on screen, because I look at it A LOT =P

    Comment by WeaponKnight — October 27, 2008 @ 12:37 pm

  43. I would have to say that thedicemaster’s version looks the best. If his is not possible then any horizontal configuration would work. The vertical style looks a little off to me.

    Comment by OmniEnforcer — October 27, 2008 @ 12:41 pm

  44. Looking great so far! My favourites are thedicemaster’s version and the vertical version. But I’ll be fine with everything. Keep up the good work ;). And early 2009 sounds rather early to me. Better then not getting this game at all, isn’t it?

    Comment by Markus — October 27, 2008 @ 3:38 pm

  45. Actually I think the Kaji version looks even better then the vertical. So my first choice would be thedicemaster and my second choice Kaji.

    Comment by Markus — October 27, 2008 @ 3:40 pm

  46. I liked thedicemaster`s version! =D
Even though it`s shopped, you should definetly try to use it

    Comment by Funchal99 — October 27, 2008 @ 4:01 pm

  47. I like thedicemaster’s version as well. If that’s not doable, then probably the first one you posted, the one that is on the first two shots.

Too bad we won’t get too see this until at least 3+ months more, but you can’t rush quality, now can you? ;p

    Comment by GrayFox2510 — October 28, 2008 @ 12:15 am

  48. Thedicemaster’s version looks pretty good, it’s well organized and easy to read.
But imho, whichever format you pick we’ll eventually get used to πŸ™‚

    Comment by Djinn — October 28, 2008 @ 2:27 am

  49. I prefer thedicemaster/kaji’s versions.

    Comment by Kosen — October 28, 2008 @ 3:07 pm

  50. I like thedicemaster’s version, but if it’s not possible… The horizontal version works well. I prefer the right-alignment of the names to Kaji’s version where they are centered.

    Comment by Hiro the Warrior — October 28, 2008 @ 3:22 pm

  51. Although, to be honest, I like the vertical version, too… :’D. I just don’t like Kaji’s version.

    Comment by Hiro the Warrior — October 28, 2008 @ 3:25 pm

  52. well, as for me,i like the vertical version, it looks nicer and if possible with the kaji version as well, i like it to be as close to the real thing as possible, so that’s just me and thanks for the good news on the patch. =D

    Good luck with COE ^^

hmm, on 2nd thought, thedicemaster version looks more clean, arghh, they are both real good, =(

Just by looking at the screen, its not easy to tell if there is anything more that we can suggest, other than the name thing, which in the new edits, have been added, i can’t tell if there is anything more to change =(

    Comment by mrfatso — October 28, 2008 @ 7:18 pm

  53. I think I’m retarded. I don’t see a difference in either styles. Maybe I should grab my glasses. I do know that regardless of what style you pick, I’m very excited! I’m glad you aren’t rushing yourself. Thus far, the game looks very professional! Thank you for your efforts!

    Comment by Bunnybunn — October 29, 2008 @ 9:49 am

  54. I want version Kaji >_>

  56. Early next year still sounds pretty ambitious, best of luck to you! I’ll be waiting patiently.

    Comment by Phynx — October 30, 2008 @ 1:23 am

  57. Another option is to leave the names where they are as in version Kaji, but left-align them as in version dicemaster, and position them so that Hermana isn’t too close to the HP/TP display and it uses up the whitespace nicely. Call this… version Kajimaster πŸ˜›

    Mockup:

    Comment by Kaji — October 30, 2008 @ 8:45 am

  58. Guys, you are my heroes, take your time so we can have a very good translation.
Also my vote goes for thedicemaster version, but the Kajimaster version looks also good in my opinion.

    Comment by skatalite — October 30, 2008 @ 9:07 am

  59. Definitely thedicemaster’s.

    Comment by Majutsuko — October 30, 2008 @ 10:44 am

  60. Either thedicemaster or Kajimaster look great to me. I’m willing to wait forever for this, as long as it’s well done. But there seems to be no chance of it being done shoddily, seeing as how good it looks.

    Comment by Freudian Lemur — October 30, 2008 @ 11:38 am

  61. Well, i dont see any difference between the images :S

    Comment by Faget — October 30, 2008 @ 5:24 pm

  62. Thedicemaster seems good for me! Anyway thx for the update and take your time, we’ll be patiently wait for this!!

    Comment by Ryvie — October 30, 2008 @ 9:43 pm

  63. @Faget: Look at the positions of the names on the bottom screens.

    Comment by Hiro the Warrior — October 31, 2008 @ 4:37 pm

  64. I definitely like “thedicemaster” mock-up for the lower screen. It’s very polished and organized. Very easy to read at a glance. I think that one would be ideal if it could be reproduced in game. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to the release when it comes around. Between this and all the new games coming out lately, I am currious when I will have time to finish them all.

    Comment by Ryan — October 31, 2008 @ 4:52 pm

  65. I also vote for thedicemaster’s setup. If it isn’t possible, I like the vertical setup better than the other one!

The work you’re doing is looking great! Thanks guys!

  66. THEDICEMASTER’S!!!!
It feels the least cluttered and easy to quickly look at.
If not, the Kaji one becaused the “name” is redundant.
Thanks a lot guys! Can’t wait for the release!

  72. Hi! I prefer dicemaster’s layout, it feels far more polished than the other three version, not to mention it’s more logical to have the names before the level\exp imho.

Keep up the good work, the Tales fan all over the world are cheering for you! πŸ™‚

    Comment by Bylon — November 6, 2008 @ 5:31 pm

  77. The dicemaster version of course, it’s close to common sense to have names clearly layed out, and then the rest of stats.

    Comment by Porgos — November 8, 2008 @ 7:01 pm

  78. Honestly, I really like thedicemaster’s layout, it’s so beautiful, but if it’s not possible πŸ™‚ then the vertical one works the best, the horizontal one is not so good, as the word “name” is directly above the experiece points, making it looks so busy…

    keep up the good work!

    Comment by TOq — November 10, 2008 @ 8:02 pm

  81. I prefer “dicemaster”‘s layout as well.

I think having the word “Name” listed is redundant and unnecessary. It also makes the screen look extremely cluttered.

Please keep up the good work! I’m just thankful you guys are putting the effort into doing this! Thank you! No matter how long this takes, I’m sure it’ll be more than worth the wait!
