Happy New Year

Happy New Year! We’re bringing it in with the long-awaited announcement of our newest translation – Tales of Destiny (PS2) Director’s Cut! It’s a joint project with Phantasian Productions!

People have been speculating for months, but we are indeed working on ToDr. Despite what some believed, Cless and I have been on good terms in spite of Tales of Phantasia (mostly because he’s very forgiving). Lately I’ve really been regretting Tales of Phantasia and all the drama that came of it. I didn’t have the skills that I needed and I really wish I hadn’t stepped on many of the toes that I did. I worked on Phantasia because I loved it, but still, it was too soon for me to attempt a project of that magnitude on my own. I made a lot of mistakes and a lot of claims that I couldn’t live up to. I disappointed some people and I realize that some still worry about my translations. My point is that I’m thrilled to be working with Cless as well as with gogs, Kajitani-Eizan and Carnivol. The three of them have always been the first to tell me when they think I’ve slipped up and there are few people I trust more when it comes to editing. With their help and Cless’ experience working with the PS2, I’m confident that this patch will be one that everyone will love.

As most of you know, this project has been going on behind the scenes for months now. However, Phantasian Productions has been putting most of their time into Tales of Phantasia just as Kingcom and I have been focused on Innocence. From the beginning, Cless and I agreed that Destiny wouldn’t take priority over other projects. Now that’s it has been announced, I expect it to speed up a little bit. The translation is all that is really holding us back from a menu patch, so it really shouldn’t be far off.

Of course, neither Cless nor I like to do things halfway, so our intention from the beginning has been a full translation. The plan is to release the menu patch first and then begin work on the story. The translation will retain many of the original (PSX) Destiny localized terms. Expect to see many of the same ones in the translation (with the exception of some names like Johnny, Mighty Kongman, and Woodrow). We hope that fans of both the original translation and the Japanese text will be able to enjoy this translation.

So happy new year from Absolute Zero and Phantasian Productions! We hope that this coming year will be one of the best for Tales fans and ask for your continued support.

Be sure to check Phantasian Productions for more images and Cless’ announcement message! And to celebrate the occasion, I made myself a new banner. ^_^

  2. 1. Isn’t Phantasia already in english?

    2. How would I go about playing this anyway? PS2 emulators aren’t known for speed. I have a Athlon 64 x2 5200+ overclocked to 3 GH/z, a 9800 gt stock clocked, a 9500 gt for phsyX and 4 gigs of ram clocked at 8xx something (has to do with am2+ sockets and shit) and I still don’t think I can run PS2 games at full speed, even though I can get 20 FPS on Crysis max settigns no AA.

  18. Awesome!!!

the first time I played ToD I was really young, and english is not my first language, so I couldn’t aprecciate it the way it deserved, I’m really happy that I’ll be able to do so with this enhanced version ^^

thanks a lot guys, any news on a Tales of game is great news to me ^^ (even more if it’s a translation project)

    Comment by IamYourFather — January 1, 2009 @ 8:54 am

  19. There’s also a Tales of Destiny 2 for the PSP, but it was released only in japan just like the ps2 version.
Is it possible that it can be translated with the same files as the ones on the ps2?

    Comment by Yuri — January 1, 2009 @ 10:00 am

  20. IIRC, ToD2 PSP had a new compression scheme Cless isn’t able to crack at the moment (due to needing to compress stuff to fit it on the UMD).

    Comment by Wilhelm — January 1, 2009 @ 12:17 pm

and what about us non DCers… I’v bought the Original PS2 tod….

    Comment by Epyon — January 1, 2009 @ 11:00 pm

  28. Come on you guys have to STOP!!This is getting ridiculous! A while ago, i picked up ToP, ready to go at it with a guide, but found out y’all were working on a patch so i waited for it(loved it btw, do not belittle your work, it was good). two months ago i got a quarter through Innocence before i found out the same thing, okay, fair enough i should have checked. A week ago i saw the test y’all did with Hearts and almost screamed as i thought it was your next, turns out there was nothing to worry about. And now, with Destiny coming in the main you guys pull this stunt. Sigh, i just started both rebirth and Destiny two last week(yeah i know i should not, but they both beckoned and now i am forced to play them at the same time), i hope you guys have no designs on those as i will then go crazy if you do, but since i have yet to play hearts… /Semi-serious diatribe

But really guys, keep up the good work.

  33. Wow, best. New year’s firt message. EVER!

I still think you should first finish Innocence and then concentrate on Destiny DC, but do as you please, great sir! I hope everything goes alright, keep up the good work… FOREVER! Or… for as long as you want. Yeah.

Anyway, you are doing a great work, keep it up!

    Comment by Sahgo — January 2, 2009 @ 10:46 am

  34. Love you guys.
It’s great that you’re working on a new tales.
Although I would’ve hoped a new project would be ToR or ToDII.
But if you guys are working on the ps2 it shouldn’t be long before we hear an announcement about either, right? 🙂

anyways happy new year, and I hope to see the ToI patch soon ^_^

    Comment by Djinn_690 — January 2, 2009 @ 1:45 pm

  35. Just a question, will this patch be available only for emulator, or will there be a way to patch directly on the CD and make it run on a PS2?

    Comment by Jonathan — January 2, 2009 @ 6:36 pm

  36. @Jonathan: You’ll need to have either a modchip’D PS2, Swap Magic, or an HD Loader. If you’re doing the first two, you’ll need to burn the patched game on a recordable DVD. For the last one, AFAIK, you just install it on the HD.

    Comment by Wilhelm — January 2, 2009 @ 7:15 pm

  37. Oh this is lovely. I’ll wait forever as long as I get a chance to play this.

    Comment by kenshin20003 — January 3, 2009 @ 12:05 am

  38. Oh, I am so happy! This is just too funny and too good to be true. I just played the original US PSX version about a week ago. I had half-heartedly picked it up while waiting until I could replace my Xbox 360’s fan with a quieter one, so I could play ToVesperia without hearing “GRRRROOOWWW!!!” in the background. I got addicted to Destiny and almost literally could not put it down until I beat it in the span of three days. I just fell in love with the game.

I’m so excited for Destiny DC translation patch. Skits, fully voiced, lower encounter rate, and in English, oh my! I’m glad you’ve decided to keep the original names, too. I look forward to it. I know you will do well.

    Comment by Kelocena — January 3, 2009 @ 11:04 am

  39. Ok I have a question. Say that for some reason Bandai-Namco decide to localise this in the the US, would that mean that you’ll drop the project? I want to buy this but I don’t want to spend around £50 only to find out that it has been dropped and feel like I have wasted money.
I know that I can always just learn japanese, but that will take a while.

    Comment by Fabre — January 3, 2009 @ 4:49 pm

  40. Yes, if this game is announced for localization, it will be dropped immediately.

    Comment by throughhim413 — January 3, 2009 @ 4:53 pm

  41. I think that it will rain cows first than namco trews any PS2 tales to USA.

    Comment by Fei Wong — January 3, 2009 @ 5:20 pm

  42. Well it is good that you would do that. I should be happy considering I would still be able too play it in english…well there is always ebay to sell the japanese if they did localise it.
I guess I no longer have a problem then.

    Good luck with these projects!

    Comment by Fabre — January 3, 2009 @ 5:44 pm

  43. OMG yeah you are F!@#% awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 this its my favorite RPG from all the times!!!!!!!!!! thank you absolute zero!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  46. First of all, don’t start saying bad things about your work on your ToP’s patch. I already played it and though it may contains some mistakes, what you did was great and I’m sure that everyone agrees with me. You’re magnificent, the Phantasian Production does wonder, and together you both will make even greater things. Keep up the good work guys, oh, and happy new year.

  47. 49. I’m absolutely not exaggerating when I say I’m probably one of the happiest fans out there to hear that you’re working on ToD. I’ve been a huge fan of it for years, despite never having the chance to actually play it. Thank you so much for announcing this project, and I’ll patiently wait for the day it is finished in the future.

    Comment by Kyle — January 7, 2009 @ 10:49 pm

  54. Looking at Cless’ screenshots on his site I have to ask…Will your stance on Japanese transliteration trump his or not? Is he going to go with that lame Hepburn romanization thing again? (Azure Edge -> “Sohajin” should be “Souhajin”) Reading Hepburn’s romanization always makes for some butchered-sounding Japanese in my head. >_>

I like that artes have the Japanese name in brackets at least though. They probably won’t show up in battle though, right? Too cluttering, I’d assume. At any rate it makes for an easier transition in learning the English names.

    Comment by Majutsuko — January 8, 2009 @ 7:48 am

  55. For now, the romanizations only appear in the menu. I’ll bring up the matter of romanization, but I’m not making any promises. I mean, when it comes down to it, you don’t really like my policy of using macrons either, right? There aren’t many people who prefer the expanded romanization, most either use macrons or Hepburn. Still, I’ll try to get an answer at least.

    Comment by throughhim413 — January 8, 2009 @ 9:44 am

  56. I know I’ve said I wasn’t fond of macrons, but they’re better than having nothing showing the double vowels. I know they help save space for you too. At the end of the day, I’m fine with them. I just don’t want to see non-standard romanizations like “shyakoken” instead of “Shakkōken”.

    Comment by Majutsuko — January 10, 2009 @ 7:40 am

  57. I LOVE YOU GUYS!!! No seriously, I just started playing this game using a script translation available online, but a bunch of the skits are untranslated and there are holes in the script, not to mention the NPC’s dialogue is untranslated, which really hurts.

I honestly think this game has one of THE best Tales battles systems ever though, and the characters seem charming and funny. Also, Leon = awesome, and same with Rutee.

Out of curiosity, will you be translating the version of ToD Remake that includes Leon’s Side?

    Comment by Kitty Fields — January 10, 2009 @ 6:39 pm

  58. The Director’s Cut is the only version we’re translating.

    Comment by throughhim413 — January 10, 2009 @ 7:10 pm

  59. man can you tell me the prograns you use to modify the japanese for inglish?

i already have traslated some things from tales of hearts
but i don’t know hoy to put in the game

    can you help?

    Comment by god.maico — January 10, 2009 @ 8:56 pm

  60. Hey I want to help you guys a littlr since the translations are holding you back so here
Its a fan translation of the main storyline so I just wanted to help ^_^

    Comment by Steve — January 11, 2009 @ 3:17 pm

  61. Just wondering…
Does the story change anything from the PSX version?

    Comment by Skelletonike — January 11, 2009 @ 3:24 pm

  62. We’re aware of that wiki, but we have no intention of using it. We want to do the translation on our own and without stealing someone else’s work.

There are tons of changes from the PSX version. They’re hardly the same game, in many ways.

    Comment by throughhim413 — January 11, 2009 @ 3:51 pm

  63. Oh im sorry >.<

    Comment by Steve — January 11, 2009 @ 4:12 pm

  64. Ah, since you’re working with Phantasian Productions, do you intend to subtitle lines in battle, like they’ve done for ToP?

    Comment by Hiro the Warrior — January 12, 2009 @ 5:14 am

  65. You said that the PS2 Version is much differnt. I believe that you mean the graphic. but the story should be the same, shouldn’t it?

    Comment by Mivey — January 12, 2009 @ 6:08 am

  66. @Hiro: Given how young PS2 hacking is, it might not be possible to add features in the same way. We’ll see what happens, but keep in mind that it isn’t easy programming for the PS2.

@Mivey: No, there were many changes to the story as well – the order that things happen in, the reasons that they happen, and even what actually happens. Like I said before, they’re hardly the same game.

    Comment by throughhim413 — January 12, 2009 @ 7:29 am

  67. Indeed, playing through just a few minutes in both games will show you how different the scripts are. Pretty much only the core story and characters remained the same.

And I don’t care for battle subtitles myself. 😛

    Comment by Square711 — January 12, 2009 @ 8:25 am

  68. I’m not a fan of them, but I just wanted to know :’D. But, yes, I had forgotten that PS2 hacking really is new, I’ll have to keep that in mind.

Well, good luck with this and your Innocence translation! I’ll be rooting for you guys.

    Comment by Hiro the Warrior — January 12, 2009 @ 3:36 pm

  69. “No, there were many changes to the story as well – the order that things happen in, the reasons that they happen, and even what actually happens. Like I said before, they’re hardly the same game.”

Well… were these changes for the better? =D
I never played Tales of Destiny, anyway…
